MEMORANDUM
TO: Todd Gerhardt, City Manager
FROM: Don Johnson—Fire Chief t7y
DATE: January 23, 2017
SUBJ: Fire Department Council Update for December 2016
Fire Department Staffing:
Staffing at the end of 2016 totaled 39 of 45 paid on call firefighters. One firefighter is on medical leave
and two firefighters are on military leave.
In 2016, (5)firefighters retired from service and (3) resigned prior to ten years of service. Six firefighters
were hired during the year and are scheduled to be fully trained by the end of February. We have started
the hiring process and anticipate a start date in May of 2017.
Fire Department Response:
Total calls for 2016 was 690 calls, one less than 2017. We experienced a slight decrease in medical calls
from 2015 and a significant increase in Dispatched and Canceled Enroute calls. Motor vehicle accidents
were up slightly in comparison to 2015 as well. Most other types of calls experienced nominal
fluctuation. I am currently working with Ridgeview EMS and Sheriff's Dispatch to analyze the increase in
canceled calls.
Significant Events from Nov/Dec included;
• Assist Chaska Fire with a boat crew and incident command for a body recovery in Chaska
• Assist CCSO with multiple crews over several days for a search operation on Lake Waconia
• Mutual Aid requests were higher than normal in December
Monthly Training:
Training that occurred since my last update;
• Fire Ground Command Procedures
• Initial Response Procedures for structure fire response
• The fire department annual meeting was held on January 9th and an outside speaker conducted
training on `Dealing with Change'.
• EMS Training

The actual exercise also included Assistant Chiefs Van Asten and Murphy as role players.
• Engine 13 was placed in service on November 27th and will be first out on all medical calls and used
as primary response for duty crews. This vehicle replaced (2) rescue vehicles.
• In January, all 800mghz radios were replaced in the fire department and public works. The
replacement was based on the current radios reaching'end of life'at 15 years of service.
