The conclusion of that discussion was that is was still safe and appropriate to hunt with firearms south of Lyman Boulevard, but only with a shooting permit. An article reporting this conclusion and other information concerning the issue of hunting and animal control appeared in the July 28th edition of the Chanhassen Villager. One call was received as a result of the newspaper article from an individual interested in viewing the newly proposed shooting map to assist in their pursuit of a place to hunt. RECOMMENDA TION It is recommended that the City Council approve the proposed amendment to the Chanhassen shooting map limiting the discharge of firearms for hunting to specific areas south of Lyman Boulevard. These areas are clearly identified on the attached City of Chanhassen Shooting Area Map labeled "proposed map." ATTACHMENTS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Two examples are the ability to hunt using firearms and the ability to use snowmobiles. However, the continued urbanization of the city has led to an increase in conflicts between residential areas and activities such as hunting and snowmobiling. The city maintains a good relationship with the loca.l snowmobile club. The club has provided years of service to the community by posting and maintaining snowmobile ~rails in the area. Leaders of the club understand that it is only a matter of timeuritiLurbarnzation and continued road ConStruction will prohibit the safe mairitenanceofsnowmobile trails andcorinectorswithinthe city. Hunting by firearm, primarily as a means of controlling urban goose populations, ha.s beeri safely permittedwithin.thecityup.until the fall of 2004. The initiation of the construction of new Highway 312/212 will significantly change the landscape of Chanhas~en and the southwest metro area. The vast, majority of local goose hunting fields were maintained on property now slated for the road construction project. 1n addition., continued residentia.l growth near the highway corridor has i~sq1tedjn; increased, complaint caIls about shooting that occurred within the- gOJ":)sehunt,i~g fields., ' . , " -';"".>,,_"c..'::,'j.,..." Playground at' Chanhassen Hills This weekend, JUly 29 and 30, the last Qf four neighborhood playgrounds will be completed at Chanhassen Hills Park off Lake Susan Drive. ; Three ' playground's in Chanhassen at Curry Farms, . North'Lotus Lake and Rice Marsh Lake parks have already been erected 'by volunteers, city parks and recreation staff and Midwest Playscapes employees (the company that sold the play- groUllds to the city). . The playgrounds were pur- chased by the city through 2005 Capital Improvement Program and volunteer labor costs redi- rected money to more playground equipment. The playground at Lake Susan Park will also be re- placed later this year, but without volunteer labor. The city also set money aside to remodel the play- grounds atMinnewashta Heights Park and Carver Beach Park. .
