Approval of Amendment to the Designated Shooting Areas
in the City
On Monday, July 25, the City Council and staff discussed the issue of hunting
with firearms within the City. The conclusion of that discussion was that is was
still safe and appropriate to hunt with firearms south of Lyman Boulevard, but
only with a shooting permit. An article reporting this conclusion and other
information concerning the issue of hunting and animal control appeared in the
July 28th edition of the Chanhassen Villager. One call was received as a result
of the newspaper article from an individual interested in viewing the newly
proposed shooting map to assist in their pursuit of a place to hunt.
RECOMMENDA TION
It is recommended that the City Council approve the proposed amendment to the
Chanhassen shooting map limiting the discharge of firearms for hunting to
specific areas south of Lyman Boulevard. These areas are clearly identified on
the attached City of Chanhassen Shooting Area Map labeled "proposed map."

Amendments to Shooting Permit Areas
Traditionally the City of Chanhassen has been proactive in maintaining a broad
spectrum of recreation pursuits related to the use of rural land within the
community. Two examples are the ability to hunt using firearms and the ability
to use snowmobiles. However, the continued urbanization of the city has led to
an increase in conflicts between residential areas and activities such as hunting
and snowmobiling.
The city maintains a good relationship with the loca.l snowmobile club. The
club has provided years of service to the community by posting and maintaining
snowmobile ~rails in the area. Leaders of the club understand that it is only a
matter of timeuritiLurbarnzation and continued road ConStruction will prohibit
the safe mairitenanceofsnowmobile trails andcorinectorswithinthe city.
Hunting by firearm, primarily as a means of controlling urban goose
populations, ha.s beeri safely permittedwithin.thecityup.until the fall of 2004.
The initiation of the construction of new Highway 312/212 will significantly
change the landscape of Chanhas~en and the southwest metro area. The vast,
majority of local goose hunting fields were maintained on property now slated
for the road construction project. 1n addition., continued residentia.l growth near
the highway corridor has i~sq1tedjn; increased, complaint caIls about shooting

Hunting in Chanhassen has
been a long-standing, tradition,
and part of the city1sheritage,
according to. Director of Parks
and Recreation Todd'Hoffman.
' But that heritage and tradi-
tion will likely be bagged after
the 2005 season.
"The system has been around
for 15 to 20 years," Hoffman said.
"It keeps shrinking, and now
with 212 being approved it really
takes out a majority of the area
where you could hunt."
