MEMORANDUM
TO: Todd Gerhardt, City Manager
FROM: Jill Sinclair, Environmental Resources Specialist
DATE: April 24, 2017
SUBJ: Arbor Day Proclamation
PROPOSED MOTION:
"The City Council adopts a resolution proclaiming Chanhassen Arbor Day as May 6, 2017."
Approval requires a simple majority vote of the council.
BACKGROUND
Chanhassen's Arbor Day celebration will be held on Saturday, May 6 this year at North Lotus Lake
Park. In honor of the day, 20 trees will be planted in the park. These plantings will help to diversify
the tree species in the park. In the last analysis, 36% of the trees in the park are ash trees and will be
impacted by EAB in the future. Planting a mix of species in the park will help to alleviate the
eventual change to the park trees.
Arbor Day plantings will be done by community volunteers from local churches, scout troops,
neighborhoods, families and businesses. The event will begin at 9:00 am with a welcome gathering
of volunteers at the gazebo and progress into the tree planting work. There will be refreshments, free
seedlings, and tree coupons for the volunteers. The event will be held rain or shine and we are
asking that groups dress for the work and weather and bring a shovel or two to help.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council adopt the attached resolution proclaiming Chanhassen Arbor
Day as May 6,2017.
