SUBJ: Fire Department Council Update for May 2017
Fire Department Staffing:
The 2017 hiring process is now complete and I am happy to report that we were able to start seven new
probationary firefighters on June 12, 2017. We introduced the new members to the department and
retirees that evening at the annual fire department picnic. Training will begin for this group at the end of
June with Emergency Medical Responder training. The fall academy begins the first week of September.
Staffing is now at 42 of 45 paid on call firefighters. One firefighter is on medical leave.
Fire Department Response:
The fire department responded to 55 calls for service in May and the YTD total is 289. Duty crew
responded to 11 of those calls on scheduled shifts bringing the YTD total to 42.
Significant Calls included;
• (26) EMS calls including (6) Motor Vehicle Accidents
• (1)Structure Fire on West Farm Road involving a basement refrigerator with minor damage
• (1) Car Fire on Hwy 5 and Dell Road
Monthly Training:
Training that occurred since my last update;
• Officers training to include a Pre-Plan walk through of Chic Filet
• Relay pumping
• Auto Extrication Training
• I attended the Wisconsin State Fire Chiefs Association Conference June 22—25 as a partnership
for my duties as the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association, Conference Chair duties. This was
a great experience for learning and networking.

Other Activities:
• Station 2 was closed from May 22 through June 1 to repair the front pad and replace the parking
lot and front drive.
• We honored our annual commitment to the Chanhassen Legion by escorting their honor guard
to several Chanhassen Cemeteries on Memorial Day morning. This involved several department
members and apparatus.
• We staffed a medical standby crew for the Memorial Day service at City Center Park
• Annual Hose and Ladder testing was conducted on all apparatus on June 15t and 2nd
• We staffed a medical standby crew for the Lion's Walk at the Arboretum on June 3rd
