Attachment 9- Private Street Signs • w 9 CITY OF CHANIIASSEN S Chanhassen is a Community for Life-Providing for Today and Planning forTomorrow 4' H A MEMORANDUM TO: Todd Gerhardt, City Manager FROM: Stephanie Smith,Project Engineer DATE: September 25, 2017 SUBJ: Private Street Signs Issue The City Code does have requirements for regulatory, warning or guidance signage on private streets. Private developments are installing signs that do not meet signage standards set by the Minnesota Manual on Uniform Traffic Devices. This can result in difficulty to read and driver confusion. Chanhassen's City Code is silent on signage requirements for private developments and private streets. Alternatives 1) Do nothing.Non-standard signs would continue to be installed. 2) Amend Section 20-1103 to require private street signage to follow the most recent version of the Minnesota Manual on Uniform Traffic Devices. Recommendation Staff recommends Option 2 to make signage consistent within the City. The revised ordinance could read: Sec. 20-1103. Private streets. (a) Private streets are prohibited unless created and maintained pursuant to City Code subsections 18-57 (n), (o) and (r). Lots of record created prior to December 10, 1990 are exempt from the private streets requirements. (Ord. No. 209, § 3, 6-27-94; Ord. No. 324, § 24, 7-9-01) (b) Private streets are required to use signage that is consistent with the most recent version of the Minnesota Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
