presentation doc 2Minnesota Youth Tobacco Use The Minnesota Youth Tobacco Survey (MYTS) has been conducted since 2000, by the Minnesota Department of Health to provide comprehensive, in depth information on the tobacco use of young people and to design and evaluate prevention effort. For the first time since its initial administration, the Minnesota Youth Tobacco Survey reported an increase in use of tobacco products among middle school and high school students in 2017. This increase is attributable to the rising popularity of e -cigarettes and flavored products. Tobacco remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in our state, moreover the Minnesota Department of Health reports 102,100 youth are projected to die from smoking related illness. One evidence -based strategy which has proven effective at reducing youth tobacco use is minimizing youth access. Several localities and an increasing number of states are adopting Tobacco 21 policies which limit the sale of tobacco and vape related products to those under the age of 21 years. As 95% of current adult smokers began use prior to the age of 21, if we can limit access and stop youth from starting, we will save countless lives, and years lost to this devastating product. Hence, as community, health, and youth advocates we need to ensure we do everything possible to improve this public health concern.
