The hand of God was ever evident in Andrew Pike's life.
Andrew was born with cystic fibrosis, the number one genetic killer of
young people at the time where life expectancy was late teens. He was
misdiagnosed early on which allowed his parents, Bob and Barb, to get
health insurance which later covered his many medicines,
hospitalizations, and therapies with his beloved"nurse," Leona Kerber. In
his teens, he was diagnosed with CF-related diabetes.
Because of these diagnoses, Andrew felt like he had overcome significant
adversity when he was able to become a deputy sheriff for Carver County
and then pursue a second career in medicine as a critical care paramedic
while also teaching other paramedics and law enforcement officers EMT,
first responder and refresher courses. He said during his last
hospitalization, "God is the reason for life, the reason for me achieving
things I wouldn't have otherwise. My passion for life is to serve others.
The joy in my life is to be the hands and feet of Jesus."
One of Andrew's coolest God moments came through his experience as a
paramedic. While he was interning at Hennepin County Medical Center, a
female patient asked him to pray with her. "I don't know what it is, but
the moment you came in here, I felt I needed to pray with you," she told
Drew. He liked and appreciated his role as the praying paramedic.
SCANNED
Over the years, the lifespan expectancy of a CF patient was extended to
40s and beyond. However, months before Andrew's fortieth birthday,
Andrew received the additional diagnoses of pancreatic cancer on July
16, 2019. (His pancreas has never done him any favors.) During the last
eleven months, Andrew's mantra has been "God is good all the time. All
the time, God is good." Andrew's prayer life and understanding of his
Creator deepened, allowing Andrew to continue to praise his Savior
despite the circumstances. Through the lives he touched in person and
through CaringBridge, Andrew finished his race as a good and faithful
servant surrounded by his wife, siblings, mom, and other family
members.
Andrew is survived by his wife, Jessica; his mother Barbara; his father
and his wife, Robert and Andrea; his siblings and their families Liz
Wheeler (Dan, Annika, Lauren, Emily, Megan), Sara Davis (Steve,
Ethan, Kennedy), Becky Pluth (Brad, Raegan, Brody, Gabe, Lucas),
Robert (Rosie, Will, Olivia, Charlotte, Wyatt), John (Cassie, Howard,
Henrik, Lilly, Lucy, Johnny, Baby Girl); kind-of brother-in-law Mike
Davis; Gramma Pat Adams; father and mother-in-law Brad and Bev
Vettrus; sister-in-law Becky Hoage (Matt, Miriam, Abbie, Ella); brother-
in-law Ryan (Kim, Adelynn, Benny, Piper); maternal grandmother-in-law
Zada Broers; paternal grandmother-in-law Vonda Kelly; paternal
grandfather-in-law Dave Vettrus (Lynne); special family friend James
Kendrick (Georgia); the security team at Grace Church Eden Prairie; and
numerous other family members.
"But I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to
prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future."
