REGULAR MEETING
JUNE 17, 2011
Chairwoman Nevin called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Barbara Nevin, Virginia Prior, Carol Buesgens,
Pat McGough, Naomi Moe and Terry Grathen, Thomas Wilson.
MEMBERS ABSENT: None.
STAFF PRESENT: Sharmeen Al-Jaff, Sue Bill.
VISITORS: None.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Commissioner Moe moved to approve the
agenda. Commissioner McGough seconded the motion to approve the
agenda. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES DATED MAY 13, 2011: Commissioner
Wilson moved to approve the minutes. Commissioner McGough seconded the
motion. All voted in favor and motion carried.
UDATE ON INTERGENERATIONAL GOAL: Commissioner
McGough contacted the Career Center at the Chanhassen High school and
met with Emily Mattran, Career Resource Manager/Career Specialist, to
discuss the possibility of joint activities between students and senior citizens.
Mattran was receptive to the idea. She had a brief encounter with the head
of the drama department and informed him of the concept. Starting next
year, seniors at the high school will start a new program. They will work
with members of a group in an area they are interested in. In 2013, all
seniors will be required to complete a Capstone Project.
Commissioner McGough will invite Emily Mattran to the August 19, 2011
Senior Commission meeting to further discuss the concept.
UPDATE ON HEALTH BILL FORUM: Staff contacted the Vital Aging
Network (VAN) and was informed that they intend to hold forums on October
11 and 12, 2011 for individuals that wish to learn how health care reform is
influencing Medicare; receive an overview of Medicare for 2012; understand
Medicare in MN for 2012; locate resources available to help answer questions;
and attend a breakout session with various health plans and resources. The
forums will be held from 8:30AM to 12:30PM on:
Tuesday, October 11, 2011 or Wednesday, October 12, 2011

The forum content, speakers, and exhibitors will be the same at both forums.
These forums are free and open to the public. These forums are co-sponsored
by the City of Bloomington and Roseville Lutheran Church. Forum partners
include the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging and the Minnesota Board on
Aging.
DINNER WITH THE MAYOR: Dinner with the Mayor will take place at
the Senior Center prior to a concert in the park. The event will take place on
July 21, 2011, at 5:00 p.m. Cost for the event is $8.00.
UPDATE ON 4TH OF JULY ACTIVITIES: Staff informed the
Commission that the 2011 Chanhassen 4th of July Celebration brochure will be
released and it will feature Bingo as a new game offered by the Senior
Commission. Commissioners that will volunteer for the event include
Chairwoman Nevin, Commissioners Prior, Buesgens, and Grathen.
SENIOR CENTER EVENTS-SUMMER PICNIC: The Lions Club will be
hosting the annual summer picnic at the Hilltop Picnic Shelter.
SENIOR COMMISSION COMMENTS: The Senior Center will be closed
between September 6 and October 10 due to construction in the parking lot.
ADJOURNMENT: Commissioner Moe moved, Commissioner Grathen
seconded the motion to adjourn the meeting. All voted in favor and the motion
carried.
