WS 2005 09 12 CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION MINUTES MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2005 Mayor Furlong called the work session to order at 5:10 p.m. COUNCIL MEMBERS PRESENT: Mayor Furlong, Councilman Lundquist, Councilman Peterson and Councilwoman Tjornhom STAFF PRESENT: Todd Gerhardt, Justin Miller, Kate Aanenson, and Todd Hoffman JOINT MEETING WITH THE PARK & RECREATION COMMISSION Glenn Stolar, Anne Murphy, Paula Atkins, Tom Kelly, and Steve Scharfenberg were present from the Park & Recreation Commission. ? 2005 Playground Projects : Commission Chair Glenn Stolar thanked the City Council for their support of the 2005 playground improvement project. The new playgrounds are being widely used. The Commission expressed a desire to hold a picnic with the Council and staff at the conclusion of the Lake Susan Park project. ? Athletic Fields: The Commission is looking to increase the capacity of our athletic fields with a future lighting project on four or more fields. The Council requested that the Commission study the costs and benefits of such a project and report back to the Council. ? Off-Leash Dog Area: The Commission has made a recommendation that up to $50,000 be invested in off-leash dog areas in 2005. The first proposal is a joint project with Carver County to be located at Minnewashta Regional Park. The County has stated that if area communities pledge $40,000 towards the project that they will initiate efforts to construct initial improvements for a 17-acre off-leash dog area. The Commission is also considering the merits of an off-leash area at Lake Ann Park. ? Skate Park: The Commission and Council discussed the recent closing of the skate park due to conduct issues. This was the second time the park has been closed this season. JOINT MEETING WITH THE ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION Marcus Zbinden and Dottie Shea were present from the Environmental Commission. th The Commission gave the Council an update on Arbor Day events, July 4 Parade, Chanhassen Day at the Arboretum, the upcoming Environmental Excellence Awards Program, and the Fall Recycling Day. They discussed the number of awards that are given for the Environmental Excellence Program. The Council suggested more advertising for the Fall Recycling Day and suggested including it in The Maple Leaf publication and on cable tv. CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION MINUTES SEPTEMBER 12, 2005 PAGE 2 UPDATE ON 2005 INDUSTRIAL REPLACEMENT Staff presented several potential industrial sites that could be used to make up the loss of 60 acres of office/industrial land on the Town & Country and Peterson sites.
