Arbor Day Proclamation
This year the City of Chanhassen is planning an Arbor Day celebration to be held
Saturday, April 25. On that (fay, community groups will be cleaning
neighborhood parks in the morning and at noon the event will expand its activities
at City Hall. In order to properly recognize the day, I am requesting City Council
to pass the attached proclamation concerning Arbor Day.
The schedule for the Arbor Day celebration is as follows:
9 am - 11 am
Adopt-A-Park
clean-up at neighborhood parks by local community groups
11 am - Noon
Thank you luncheon for park clean-up groups at City Hall
Noon - 3 p.m. City Hall
Raptor Center Presentations at 1 :30 and 2:30 p.m.: Chanhassen City Council Chambers

Also on a positive note, the City was recently informed that for the third year in a
row it has the recognition of being a Tree City USA. A total of 134 Minnesota
cities have been honored this year and in the country, Minnesota ranks third in the
number of cit1es designated as Tree City USA. Chanhassen should feel proud to
be included.

PROCLAMATION DECLARING SATURDAY, APRIL 25 AS ARBOR DAY
WHEREAS, In 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture
that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and
WHEREAS, this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more
than a million trees in Nebraska; and
WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now;pbserved throughout the nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut
heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide
habitat for wildlife; and
WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood for our homes, fuel for
our fires and countless other wood products; and
WHEREAS, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of
business areas, and beautify our community; and
WHEREAS, trees are a source of joy and spiritual renewal; and
WHEREAS, Chanhassen has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor
Day Foundation and desires to continue its tree-planting ways.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Nancy K. Mancino, Mayor of the City of Chanhassen, do hereby
proclaim Saturday, April 25, 1998 as ARBOR DAY in the City of Chanhassen. I urge all citizens to
support efforts to care for our trees and woodlands and to support our city's community forestry
program; and further, I urge all citizens to plant trees to gladden the hearts and promote the well-
being of present and future generations.
