Citizen Comments Regarding Cutting the Lifeguard Program from the 1928 Budget
Date Name/Address/Phone I Comments
January 16, 1998 Tom McFarland I was just reading in the paper about our lifeguards
being cut, and I realize this isn't your problem
directly, but what in the hell are people thinking
about? Have you been to Lake Ann on a busy day?
Is it going to take a child drowning down there in
order for you people to save $22,000? This is
ridiculous and I'll be making several more calls and
talk to Mancino. I realize this isn't your doing
.. directly, but this is insanity.

January 16, 1998 Linda Kramer I'm calling regarding the lifeguards at Lake Ann
474-4259 being cut from the budget. I'm calling to say that I
/ feel that that's a very bad idea and do not want to
see them cut. My kids use the Lake Ann beach and
I feel it is very important to have a lifeguard there,
even if the parents are there to watch their kids.
Lifeguards are still there for emergencies, they
know CPR and even if there are some rowdy kids
they can call and get help or whatever, keep order.
I think it is very important to have lifeguards there
for safety purposes and really don't want to see
them cut from the budget. I don't need a call back.
I just wanted to let you know what I thought.
January 20, 1998 Julie Tanner I just read the article yesterday about that the
lifeguards are going to be cut at Lake Ann Park. I
would really like to register my opinion that I think
they are important to have there. That beach is so
busy and there are a lot of little kids there. I know I
was there last summer a few times when the
lifeguards actually had to go in the water and help
somebody. I think it is really cutting off an
important service to the residents of Chanhassen.
January 21, 1998 Mike Carr Disappointed about decision to cut lifeguards from
the budget. He thought Chanhassen had bought
into the concept that "it takes a whole village to
raise a child." He appreciates the new road, but
.1 cannot understand how the city could invest that
much money in a road to improve access safety and
then turn around and cut the lifeguards.
January 26, 1998 Julie Tripstra I am a citizen of northwestern Chanhassen. I live
out by Lake Minnewashta. I'm calling concerning
the prospect of there being no lifeguards out at
Lake Ann. I see this as a serious liability for the
City of Chanhassen. I have to high school aged
kids that currently are on MCES staff. They say it
is a very stressful beach to work from a lifeguard's
perspective and that they've experienced no less
than three saves a day. I would you to reconsider
this idea and perhaps staff that beach so we can
keep our children safe.
January 26, 1998 Ann Marsh I am very concerned about not rehiring the
Nez Perce Court' lifeguards at Lake Ann. One of the main reasons
for my concern is that I have a daughter who goes
to Children's World who is in first grade and a son
who is in the SACC program at Chanhassen
Elementary and at Bluff Creek during the summer.
I' During the summer I know they use Lake Ann
Beach very heavily and enjoyed it very much. I
know that they are not staffed to be able to use that
program with'out lifeguards. That concerns me very
much that they might still try to use it without
lifeguards and that would obviously be very unsafe.
I am also concerned that that will get rid of an
option in our community for those children to be
able to have that ability to go swimming at Lake
Ann.
January 26, 1998 Lee & Mary Kaufman Mr. and Mrs. Kaufman are extremely upset with
300 Hidden Lane the decision to eliminate the lifeguards. They feel
their presence is an important deterrent to
unwelcome teenage activity. It is their belief that
expecting the concession stand workers to control
the beach is asking too much.
