Ordinance Amending Chapter 9 of the Chanhassen City Code
Concerning the Fire Code
In response to the council's question of "why?" Fire Inspector Greg Hayes had
happened upon this suggested housekeeping change, I asked him h) respond.
Please see his attached August 13th memo. This change actually removes ~:(lmc
older required items, and brings us in line with what the state fire code sets forth.
I believe there is a question regarding the storage of LP gas, which is not
changed by this amendment. Again, this has been reviewed by the city vttoln,:y.
endorsed by the Public Safety Commission and overseen by the fire marshal.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION:
It is the recommendation of staff that the second reading of this code amendment
be adopted.

DATE:
August 13, 1998
SUBJECT:
Ordinance amending Chapter 9 of the Chanhassen City Code
concerning the fire code
Concerning the above ordinance, the only thing changed in the existing
ordinance was the year of the fire code that we were going to adopt. Currently
we are, by city code, under the 1988 fire code and due to the state level adopting
the 1997 Unifonn Fire Code, in order to enforce the 1997 Code we must also
change our ordinance. This was the only change in the ordinance. There were a
couple of older items removed which at the time the ordinance was adopted
there were no articles in the Unifonn Fire Code addressing them. The main
body of the document did not change.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to call me at ext. 262.

An ordinance amending Chapter 9 of the Chanhassen City Code
concerning the fire code.
Attached is a copy of the proposed amendment to the Uniform Fire Code referenced
in the Fire Prevention Section of the Chanhassen City Code. Upon reviewing our
city code, I found that our adoption of the 1988 Fire Code was an old reference, and
for the past five years we have actually been using the 1991 Fire Code. The State
Fire Marshal's office just adopted the 1998 Uniform Fire Code, and I recommend
that we adopt the same fire code. I have been working with Roger Knutson, the City
Attorney, on this project, and he drew up the draft copies which are attached for your
review. I would like to get these copies to City Council for approval as soon as
possible, in order to ward off any conflicts between codes.
If you have any questions, please call me at extension 262.
