Liquor Ordinance
Last week I received a phone call from the new manager at Applebee's Restaurant
regarding a section in our City Code that requires the managers of liquor
establishments to live in the city. Applebee's corporate office is requesting that
she move into the city by June I st, however, she is having a difficult time finding a
place that she can afford in Chanhassen (she has found options in Eden Prairie and
Minnetonka). She was wondering if the city would reconsider this requirement.
I have surveyed neighboring communities and found the following:
City Residency Requirements for Managers of Liquor Establishments
Chaska No requirement
Victoria No requirement
Excelsior No requirement
Eden Prairie No requirement
Shakopee No requirement
Minnetonka Must live in the metro area
Prior Lake Must be a resident of Minnesota and live within 50 miles of city hall
Hopkins No requirement
Champlin No requirement
Chanhassen Must live in Chanhassen
In speaking with the Roger Knutson, City Attorney, he knew of no other
community that required the manager of a liquor establishment to live in the
community. He stated that some communities require that the manager live in the
. State of Minnesota; however, this has caused problems in communities near the
state borders.
I would request that the city council review this issue and determine if they would
like to either amend or delete this requirement from the city code.
