FAX (612) 937-5739 MEMORANDUM FROM: Mayor & City Council Don Ashworth, City Manager Scott Harr, Public Safety Director sr;}if TO: DATE: October 23, 1997 SUBJ: Snowmobile Safety Enforcement Grant This memo is to recommend that the City Council authorize Chanhassen to receive funding through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Snowmobile Safety Enforcement Grant. This is a new grant opportunity for snowmobile safety enforcement, for which I did submit an application, and we did receive the maximum grant amount. That's the good news. The not so good news is that while I submitted a request for $33,000.00, the maximum amount is $1,000.00. In future years the DNR is hoping that cities will be entitled to more than $1,000.00, but that is the amount grants are capped at now. Obviously, $1,000.00 will not go all that far. However, I do not want to turn away the money, either. As part of our discussions about increasing patrol efforts on the lakes (in summer and winter), I certainly want to take advantage of grant opportunities. At least this $1,000.00 will help to obtain some of the equipment we will need. I have offered to speak on behalf of cities to get future grant amounts increased. This grant will not result in Chanhassen spending any money that was not previously budgeted. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: It is the recommendation of staff that the attached resolution be passed authorizing the City of Chanhassen to enter into this grant agreement, and thereby receive the $1,000.00.
