RESOLUTION NO: 94-36
MOTION BY: Mason
SECONDED BY: Wing
A RESOLUTION DECLARING MARCH 27 - APRIL 2, 1994 AS
"TOBACCO-FREE YOUTH WEEK"
WHEREAS, more than 400,000 premature deaths occur each year in the United States
from tobacco-related causes. This epidemic is totally preventable--and the key opportunities for
prevention are during childhood and adolescence; and
WHEREAS, at least 3.1 million adolescents are current smokers, and smoking is most
common among 17 and 18 years olds with about 25% of these young people smoking; and
WHEREAS, nicotine is often the first drug used by young people who use alcohol,
marijuana, and harder drags; and
WHEREAS, cigarette advertising appears to increase young people's risk of smoking by
conveying that smoking has social benefits and that it is more common than it really is; and
WHEREAS, in Minnesota, teenagers were illegally sold over four and one-half million
packs of cigarettes in 1991; and
WHEREAS, the most effective preventive programs are community wide ones that
combine education and public policy approaches.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Donald J. Chmiel, Mayor of the City of Chanhassen, do hereby
proclaim March 27 through April 2, 1994 as
TOBACCO-FREE YOUTH DAY
and urge citizens to take part in this important week.
