RE:
Key Financial Strategy: Downtown Park and Ride Update
BACKGROUND
One of the items in this year's Key Financial Strategies/Strategic Plan is to
monitor the status of the proposed downtown park and ride expansion. Currently,
Southwest Metro Transit (SWMT) has an easement for 120 parking stalls located
behind the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres.
Over the past few years, SWMT has been applying for grant money to construct a
larger parking structure to accommodate the growth in their service needs. Most
days all 120 stalls are filled, and occasionally customers park in non-easement
spaces. In addition, with the population growth in the area, ridership numbers are
expected to increase, therefore requiring more bus service and park and ride lots.
Earlier this year, SWMT was awarded $5.5 million in 2009/2010 federal grant
money to construct a new park and ride ramp in the Market Street location. This
grant award was especially timely considering the fact that any expansion or
redevelopment of the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres would require a parking
structure, so use of the new ramp can be positioned as a shared use for both transit
and theatre operations.
Len Simich, Southwest Metro Transit Executive Director, will be present at the
June 1th work session to provide more details about the progress his agency has
made as well as update the council on discussions regarding a temporary surface
lot expansion to accommodate the existing park and ride needs.
The City of Chanhassen . A growing community with clean lakes, quality schools, a charming downtown, thriving businesses, winding trails, and beautiful parks. A great place to live, work, and play.
