The bronze statue is titled "Two Children on a Bench" and features a young girl and boy reading a book together on a park bench. The installation would include a small placard mdicating that the statue was donated by the Friends of the Chanhassen Library. The Friends of the Chanhassen LIbrary have offered to donate the statue and placard as well as pay for installation and any future maintenance and/or upkeep. The entire project will require an investment in excess of $3,000. I met with Laura Helmer, President of the Friends of the Chanhassen Library, the week of June 5 to select a proposed location for the statue. We selected an elevated site within a planting bed located immediately outside the library entrance. This location matches the scale of the bench and would provide an attractive frammg effect. Two informational signs currently displayed at this location would be relocated. RECOMMENDA TION It IS recommended that the City of Chanhassen accept the donation of a bronze statue titled "Two Children on a Bench" from the Friends of the Chanhassen Library to be installed in City Center Park. Chanhassen, MN June 12,2006 Todd Hoffman Park & Recreation Director City of Chanhassen PO Box 147 Chanhassen MN 55317 Hi Todd: Attached is a proposal from the Friends of the Chanhassen LIbrary outlmmg a statue donatIOn that we would lIke to make to the City of Chanhassen. We are submIttmg It to you for approval from the City Counci1. It is my hope that we could get our request on the agenda for the next City Council meeting whIch I believe is on June 26. Please advise me of our next step(s). Smcerely, cI~#~ Laura Helmer FOCL President 952-975-3819 Lahelm@ao1.com FRIENDS OF THE CHANHASSEN LIBRARY 55317 . POBox 591 . Chonhossen, MN Proposal: The Friends of the Chanhassen Library (FOCL) would like to donate a bronze statue to be placed in the park outside the Chanhassen Library. The statue would also include a small placard indicating that it was donated by FOCL. (Attached are the meeting minutes in which the statue purchase was approved.) Statue Specifications: We have chosen a bronze statue called "Two Children on a Bench" (product image attached). The product dimensions are: height 38", width 40" and depth 32". Costs: FOCL will donate the statue and the memorial plaque as well as pay for installation and any future maintenance and/or upkeep. Bronze statues, however, typically require very little maintenance and are of a quality that is intended to last a lifetime. We are still negotiating with the vendor, but the approximate cost of the statue alone will be $3,000. Location: We request to have the statue located near the library, perhaps near the front entrance, but are flexible as to the exact location. It is our understanding that the onginal plans for the park include possible locations for statuary. Installation: While FOCL will pay any installation costs, we would ask that the city either install the statue using city labor or select a contractor to do so. We feel that this would facilitate the process in a way that would most easily meet any city requirements or specifications regarding the installation. Contact Persons: Laura Helmer, FOCL President, 952-975-3819 Chad Lubbers, Chanhassen Library Branch Manager, 952-227-1500 Revised 6/12/06 I' Friends of Chanhassen library (FOCl) Minutes of Seotember 10. 2005 Meetina Present: Laura Helmer, Toni Schrupp, Diane Gerhardt, Bev Hirt, Nadia Janson, Lois Fiskness, Jessica Lipsius and Chad Lubbers. Volunteer Hours: 88 Hours, plus Bev's Barkus hours, which are too numerous to count. (1) Introductions and Welcome of New Members. Laura Helmer called the meeting to order. (2) ACTION: ADDroval of Mav. 2005 Minutes. Minutes were not available; tabled until next meeting. (3) President's ReDOrt: Laura Helmer. (a) FOCL Board PositiOns. Jill Shipley, current BiFOCL VP, has come up with two possible replacement names to co-chair this position when she steps down (Lezlee Greene and Kris Solie-Johnson); Pam Latanision has shown an interest in children's programming; Laura Helmer (President) and Leah Hawke (Individual Membership VP) are both stepping down in November, so please consider one of these positions; and Geneva Sorum is a possible Finance VP. (b) General Meetina Schedule. 2005-06 general meetings are scheduled for: October 8 (added to current calendar), November 12, January 14 (brunch/introduction of new officers), March 11, May 13 and September 9, 2006. Board meetings will be scaled back. Laura requested someone take over for her at the November 12 meeting (Toni SChrupp has kindly offered to crack the whip that day). (4) Finance ReDOrt: Molly Slominski. Laura reported for an absent Molly: Money Market Fund: $17,000 (approx.); Checking Account: $20,000 (approx.). Diane reported that she met with Jill about grant writing; one grant request for $3,200 (Target) was sent in for a "book club in a bag for teens. type program, and she is waiting to hear from them; Diane has also been in touch with someone at the Senior Center about another "book club in a bag for seniors" type grant, and will keep us apprised of this. Diane has done some research on potential funding and noted that grants are more limited for seniors. (5) Proarams. Proiects and Services UDdates. (a) Fall Book Sale: Cathy Burd. One of our local Girl Scout Troops sponsored a community book drive, which brought in many books, some in excellent condition (from various neighborhood book clubs); our fall sale is scheduled for October 27, 28 and 29; Wednesday all day is setup day; Cathy contacted the Senior Center about doing a bake sale on one of the book sale days, but she hasn't heard back from anyone; please call Cathy to get on the schedule, or she will be contacting you; again the storage issue was brought up - please brainstorm - Chad noted that Waconia has to use their technology area right in the Library for their storage needs - one idea was to have more book sales. (b) Barkus: Bev Hirt. Huge success! Made approximately $750; 50 dogs participated; Bev noted many participants wanted to purchase our lime green shirts; Chad was the cute, canine Clifford, and Ruth was a magnificent McGruff; wording on next year's advertising/registration fonns should maybe be "Barkus Parade Library Fundraiser" (emphasis on fundraiser); discussion on the cost of having a family with more than one dog enter - have a group discount? Also noted $30 profit on the "animal" book sale; Laura is getting some of the pictures on the website; she also is putting some choice photos in the next newsletter. (c) Great Decisions. Dates are September 17, October 1 and November 19 (see Fall Calendar for information ). (d) Book Club In A Baa. There are both blue and yellow bags, each containing ten books, a binder with study questions, some background information on the author and a request for contributions; there are nine different kits; bags are available for a six-week checkout; applause for Kathy Perschmann for putting the binders together; three bags are checked out at this time. (6) Branch Manaaer ReDOrt: Chad Lubbers. . Gate count for the months of June, July and August 78,000; circulation: 80,000; numbers are down about 10% from last year because of hour reductions and the fact that two area libraries were closed last summer, bringing in more readers, plus the fact that our children's reading programs offer better incentives (someone from the Youth Services Program from Eden Prairie Library came and took a look at our program) . Dave Ryan's program was the single biggest summer draw with a count of 1,200 people; kudos to Jill for this idea; 180 teens signed up for the reading program this day alone . Total counts for reading programs: younger group was 1,560; teen group was 405, with a total of 1,965; the book review (contest) winners are still being determined by Marsdell Ketchum (English teacher); winners will be notified . Attendance for youth summer shows: 3,475, with the acrobat being the favorite . Attendance for teen summer shows: 453 for 18 programs; the knit program was the best attended; Napoleon Dynamite was a great hit (received a call about this from Star Tribune; Minnetonka press showed up), as was the Harry Potter show (five books given away) . 2006 Budget Allocations: 2004 budget levels were reinstated for the next year; Chad is requesting everyone contact friends and family from the area to ask their County Commissioners for later Library hours (10-9 Mon.-Thurs. and 10-5 Fri.), and maybe closing one day to make up for the extended hours, and opening Sundays from noon to 5 throughout the year; please call or write letters to Tom Workman and/or Gayle Degler, the Chanhassen representatives . Fall calendar distributed; discussion regarding having at least some of our guest speakers on cable . The movie Pirates of the Caribbean will be shown during Teen Read week, although Chad expects audience members to be mostly female and way beyond the teen years . Lois reported that Accent Framing near Lake Calhoun gave us an estimate of $2,500 to frame our donated quilt; unfortunately it probably won't be done in time for the October quilt demonstration; there will be a plaque made, as well as brochures printed up on the history of this quilt . Computer classes for seniors will be starting soon . Wireless internet service is being finalized, which means people can bring their own laptops to the Library (7) Other. *- . Statue - Laura noted the statue that members chose and voted for last year went up in price to $3,600; she passed around pictures of other statues which were less costly. Discussion. The members present gravitated towards the GirllBoy on a Bench Reading statue, which is $2,660. Nadia made and Toni I seconded a Motion to approve the purchase of the new statute, Boy/Girl on a Bench Reading statute for ---,-$2,660. Motion passed . Lois wanted to know if FOCL had any larger projects coming up on the spending agenda; not really; nothing determined at this time Lois made and Toni seconded a Motion to adjourn the meeting. Motion passed. Laura adjourned the meeting. Next General Meeting is Saturday, October 8, 2005. Respectfully Submitted, Nadia M. Janson, Secretary
