MEMORANDUM
TO:

Todd Hoffman, Park & Recreation Director ff

FROM:
DA TE:
SUBJ:
Eagle Scout Project, Scout Cummings
I have been working with Eagle Scout candidate Scott Cummings for the past
couple of months. Scott is a member of local Scout Troop 330 and is planning
on completing his selected project in early November. This particular project
was identified through input that Park and Recreation Commission Chair Glenn
Stolar and I received during a neighborhood meeting in Carver Beach this past
summer. A complete description of Scott's project is attached. Scott is still
looking for a hauling company to transport the wood chips from the Arboretum
to the project site.
City staff is pleased to be working with Mr. Cummings as he seeks to attain the
rank of Eagle Scout.
The City of Chanhassen . A growing community with clean lakes, quality schools, a charming downtown, thriving businesses, winding trails, and beautiful parks. A great place fo live, work, and play.

Eagle Scout Project

Description
My Eagle Scout Project will consist of refurbishing a walking trail for the City of
Chanhassen. The trail is located between two beaches on the west side of Lotus Lake. This trail
is roughly four tenths of a mile long and worn completely down to dirt with evidence of several
areas of erosion. My plan is to fix all 5 areas of harsh erosion with gravel rock or fallen logs in
the surrounding area. A nice finish will be added to the trail with woodchips for easier walking
between the two beaches.
After a walk through meeting at the site with City of Chanhassen Park and Recreation
Director Todd Hoffman, we developed a plan. We decided that fixing the trail with woodchips
and erosion stoppers seemed to be the best idea for the site.
Benefit
My project will benefit the Community of Chanhassen by enriching a walking trail. Only
one percent of Chanhassen' s walking trails are not asphalted, so maintenance is necessary from
time to time. The trail has taken a hit with water streaming down from the adjacent hill to the
shoreline. This leaves a place with little sunlight and many roots sticking out. The woodchips
will cover up any trip hazards and give the path a nice look to it. It will also to provide longevity
to the path. I will fix any erosion areas with either gravel rock or logs in the area provided.
Mr. Hoffman has informed me that the residents around Lotus Lake will appreciate the
refurbishing of the trail. This will create a positive sense of community for Chanhassen residents
living near Lotus Lake and a positive sense of community about the Boy Scouts.
Project Details
This beautiful trail connects two local beaches at Lotus Lake. The path is widely used by
all the residents nearby and it is clearly in need of some maintenance and touching up.

Funding
The City of Chanhassen will provide up to $1,000 in supplies, if any are required, which must be
approved as a part of the project.
Safety Hazards
Refurbishing the trails is overall a safe project.
I will talk to the bobcat operator prior to the start of the refurbishing. I will explain the lay of
the land and discuss the plan for unloading the chips. We may have the bobcat unload the chips
before any boy scouts arrive. This would prevent any accidents between the bobcat driver and
boy scouts.
In case of an accident:
. I will provide a basic first aid kit.
. We will have cell phone access.
Obstacles:
The trail is accessible at both ends by roads.
The length might be long, but a having a bobcat dropping the chips at intervals on the trail would
make the job easier.
