Monthly City Council update
Fire Department Overview:
Staffing is at 45 active firefighters as of October 16, 2006; allocation is 45 PTEs.
One of our members retired recently and one rejoined the department. We held nominations for the
December election of 15t Assistant Chief.
Our calls are at 397 as of October 8, 2006, down 77 from 474 calls at this same time last year. We
received mutual aid from Chaska Fire Dept. for the fire at State Wide Auto Salvage. Our annual Open
House was held this past Sunday.
Fire Training:
We have completed the Annual Physical Agility Test and The SCBA(self-contained breathing
apparatus) test. We also did training on medical stations and ventilation training as well as utilizing the
Search and Rescue training trailer. In November we will be doing ice rescue and fire behavior training.
Fire Marshal:
Because of our fire prevention program there are no significant fires to report. We did respond to a fire
at State Wide Auto Salvage which burned up a couple of junk cars and some old tires. The cause of this
fire was some torch work being done on ajunk car.

Fire Inspections:
Inspections are being done at various stages of construction for the following businesses; Emerson,
Gateway Apartments, Jimmy Johns Subs, Pizza Hut, Town and Country Homes, Abra Auto Body,
Minger Building, Waytec Office/Warehouse, Chanhassen Water Treatment Plant #1 and numerous
tenant remodels. Inspections of in-home licensed daycares will be started next week. After those are
completed we will be concentrating on re-inspections and begin making plans to determine which
occupancies will be inspected this coming fall and winter.
Fire Prevention:
We started the week of October 3rd with kindergarten children (approx. 600) from Chaska. We will
have the four elementary schools visiting us this week and next. We will be working with grades one
through five, as well as a number of daycare centers in the city. What used to be fire prevention week
has in recent years grown to be fire prevention month. It continues to amaze me the number of our
firefighters who take time off from their jobs and volunteer their time to help out. This year we have
thirty-two firefighters who have signed up to volunteer. The kids love it as well as our firefighters.
