RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF IMPROVEMENTS TO
TRUNK HIGHWAY 5 - PW310
WHEREAS, the number of households in Carver County is projected to increase by over
110% by 2030, with a population that will have grown from 48,000 in 1990 to 154,540 in 2030;
WHEREAS, development of both housing and new businesses is increasing dramatically
in communities along Trunk Highway 5;
WHEREAS, the current two-lane highway west of Trunk Highway 41 is clearly inadequate
to meet today's needs resulting in congestion and safety problems and will obviously not be
adequate to meet the demands that will be placed on it in the next few years;
WHEREAS, the safety problems on Trunk Highway 5 necessitate immediate
improvements in some critical areas;
WHEREAS, the Trunk Highway 5 Task force of the Southwest Corridor Transportation
Coalition consisting of Carver County, the cities of Chanhassen, Norwood Young America,
Victoria and Waconia and Laketown Township worked to assess and identify specific
improvements to Trunk Highway 5 needed in the short-term and in the long-term;
WHEREAS, the Minnesota Department of Transportation is currently in the process of
updating its 20-year Transportation System Plan;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the members of the Trunk Highway 5
Task Force and the Southwest Corridor Transportation Coalition believe that the list of projects
identified on Exhibit A is needed to improve the mobility and safety on Trunk Highway 5 and
request the Minnesota Department of Transportation to include those projects in the Metro District's
Transportation System Plan for completion during the year indicated on Exhibit A.
