Cold Weather Masonry Notes The following requirements shall govern cold weather masonry construction: 1• Construction materials shall be received, stored, and protected in ways that prevent water from entering the materials. 2. The mixing water and sand shall be heated during freezing weather to produce mortar temperatures between 400 F. and 1200 F. 3. The mortar temperature shall be maintained above freezing until used. 4. When the temperature of dry masonry units is below 200 F., they shall be heated so they are above 400 F. at their time of use. Overheating shall be avoided. 5. Masonry shall be placed only on sound unfrozen foundations free of ice and snow. 6. All newly completed masonry shall be maintained above 320 F. for at least 48 hours where masonry cement or Type I Portland Cement is used in the mortar and grout, and for at least 24 hours where Type III Portland Cement is used. 7. Adequate protection shall be provided to prevent moisture such as rain, snow, or sleet from entering the masonry. 8. Calcium chloride shall not be used as an additive in mortar or grout. All construction shall be done in accordance with the "Uniform Building Code", 1985 Edition, as amended by State of Minnesota. 2. Contractor shall verify all dimensions and conditions on site before construction is begun. All observed discrepancies shall be reported immediately to the Architect, 3. Design loads: Roof live load 40 psf 4. Concrete: (a) All reinforced concrete work shall be done in accordance with the "Building Code Requirements for Reinforced Concrete", ACI 318, latest edition, and the "Specifications for Structural Concrete for Buildings", ACI 301, latest edition. All strengths noted below are 28-day strengths. (b) Footings: 3,000 psi (c) All other poured -in -place structural concrete: 4,000 psi (d) See masonry notes for grout used in masonry construction. (e) Exterior concrete shall have 5% minimum entrained air. 5. Reinforcing steel shall be ASTM A-615 Grade 60 except for ties in columns and pilasters and beam stirrups which may be Grade 40. 6. Structural steel shall be ASTM A-36 unless noted otherwise. Tube steel shall be ASTM A-500 Grade B (Fy = 46 ksi) unless noted otherwise. 7. Structural members including joists, slabs, beams, trusses, columns, and walls are designed for "in -place" loads. Contractor is responsible for bracing, without overstressing, all structural elements as required at any stage of construction until completion of this project. 8. Provide Dur-O-Wal or equal at 16" o.c. in all masonry walls. Foundation Notes 1. All footing elevations shown are to top of footings. 2. All footings to be centered under walls above, unless noted otherwise. 3. Provide 3" clear cover for all footing reinforcement. 4. Provide wall footing reinforcing in stock lengths and bend in field as required. Lap bars minimum 42 diameters and stagger splices. 5. Shore all walls adequately before backfilling and compacting. 6. Wall footings shall be stepped 1 vertical to 2 horizontal at elevation changes unless noted otherwise on the plan. See Sec. 5/S3 for typical stepped footing detail. 7. No part of the structure shall be placed on frozen soil or foundation. If the building will be under construction during freezing weather, all footings shall be depressed 3'-6" below construction grade or insulated for frost protection, 8. All footings were designed for 2000 psf soil bearing. All topsoil and organic material shall be removed from within the building area. Any fill shall be granular inorganic fill placed in maximum 8" lifts and compacted to a minimum of 95% of standard proctor density (ASTM D698). It shall be the Contractor's responsibility to get the excavations and fills thoroughly checked by a competent Soils Engineer prior to the placement of footings so detrimental differential settlement cannot occur. Variations to the above shall be at the discretion of the Soils Engineer. For more complete soils information, refer to: STS soil.i report dated 11/9/89. site grading, excavation and backfill work will be done by owner under separate contract. Concrete Masonry Notes 1. Code for Masonry Construction: Uniform Building Code, 1985 Edition 2. Concrete Masonry Units: The quality standards for the units shall conform to the American Standard Specifications for hollow Load Bearing Masonry Units (ASTM C90). Minimum f'm shall be 1,750 psi based on face shell mortar bedding. 3. Mortar:. The mortar used for masonry construction shall be Type M below grade and shall conform to all the requirements of the Uniform Building Code, 1985 Edition. Calcium chloride shall not be used in mortar. Masonry cements shall not be used. 4. Construction: The first course of all hollow masonry shall be laid in a full bed of mortar. All units shall be laid with full face shell mortar for a distance in from the face of the unit or wall not less than the thickness of the longitudinal face shells. Mortar joints shall be maintained at 3/0" thickness for both the horizontal and vertical joints, unless noted otherwise. 5. All Masonry shall be laid up in running bond. Cold Weather Concrete Notes The following requirements shall govern cold weather concrete construction: 1. The subgrade, as well as all concrete below the new pour, shall be protected from freezing prior to concreting. 2. All forms and reinforcing shall be kept free from frost. 3. The minimum temperature of fresh concrete when delivered at the site shall conform to the following: Air Temperature Minimum Concrete Temperature (OF.) (OF.) If water or aggregate is heated above 1000 F., combine water with aggregate in mixer before cement is added. Do not mix cement with water or with mixtures of water and aggregate having a temperature greater than 1000 F. 5. The minimum temperature of fresh concrete, as placed during below normal temperatures (below 400 F.), shall be 500 F. 6. When mean daily outdoor temperature is less than 400 F., all poured concrete shall be maintained in a moist condition at a temperature not less than 500 F. for at least seven days (three days for high early strength concrete using Type III Portland Cement). When necessary, arrangements for heating, covering, insulating, or housing the concrete work shall be made in advance of placement. The arrangements shall be adequate to maintain the required temperature without injury due to concentration of heat. Combustion heaters shall not be used during the first 24 hours, unless precautions are taken to prevent exposure of concrete to exhaust gases which contain carbon dioxide. 7. Sufficient protection shall be provided to the concrete after removal of forms such that changes in temperature of the air immediately adjacent to the concrete during and immediately following the curing period are kept as uniform as possible. The rate of temperature change shall not exceed 50 F. in any one hour or 500 F. in any 24-hour period. 8. When concrete is poured during below normal temperatures (below 400 F.), at least one extra strength test cylinder shall be made and kept adjacent to the related structure and cured and protected by the same methods used for the concrete in the structure. The cylinder shall be tested at 7 days and the results reported to the Engineer. This extra cylinder shall be in addition to the two 28-day strength test cylinders required by ACI 318, latest edition. When necessary, arrangements for heating, covering, insulating, or housing the concrete work shall be made in advance of placement. The arrangements shall be adequate to maintain the required temperature Without injury due to concentration of heat. Combustion heaters shall not be used during the first 24 hours, unless precautions are taken to prevent exposure of concrete to exhaust gases which contain carbon dioxide. 7. Sufficient protection shall be provided to the concrete after removal of forms such that changes in temperature of the air immediately adjacent to the concrete during and immediately following the curing period are kept as uniform as possible. The rate of temperature change shall not exceed 50 F. in any one hour or 500 F. in any 24-hour period. 8. When concrete is poured during below normal temperatures (below 400 F.), at least one extra strength test cylinder shall be made and kept adjacent to the related structure and cured and protected by the same methods used for the concrete in the structure. Allow grout to set for 15 minutes minimum, but less than one hour, before placing succeeding lift of grout. 9.
