Arbor Day Poster Contest selection:
The commissioners reviewed the submissions from Bluff Creek
Elementary and St. Hubert’s School. They chose 6 top posters from each school and then selected a grand prize
winner from the top 12. The top poster was drawn by a student from St. Hubert’s. The city council will approve
the winners and make the presentation at their April 22 meeting.
Interviews:
The commission interviewed Bret Borth and Amy Omann. After the interviews, the commission
discussed their final recommendations for the City Council. At this time, Bob announced his resignation from the
commission due to a move outside of city limits, effective at the end of the month. Therefore, there were 3
openings to discuss. The commission unanimously voted to recommend appointment of both Bret and Amy and
re-appoint Glenn. Jill will pass those recommendations to the Council.
2013 Sustainability Report
: The commission reviewed the 4 sections. They made minor changes. The report
will go through some design modifications to make it interesting and easy to read. The commission will review it
again before submission to the council. Katie showed the commission the Minneapolis Green Print which is an
online report. The commission briefly discussed having the sustainability report be an online document in the
future.
General Discussion
:
Katie reported that the Riley Purgatory Bluff Creek Watershed District has hired a new administrator,
Claire Besser. The district is doing Use Analyses and curlyleaf pondweed treatments on certain city
lakes.
Jill reviewed Arbor Day activities. The event will be at Lake Susan park. Most trees will be planted on
the ballfield side of the park. The event is advertised in the Connection newsletter and Chan Villager as
well as the cable channel and e-reader sign.
Jill mentioned that volunteers are still being sought for the lakeshore stabilization planting along the Lake
Susan shoreline in April and May. She suggested that if anyone knows of a group who’d like to
volunteer, they should contact Terry Jeffery.
Glenn contacted the DNR regarding a spring wildflower walk at the Seminary Fen and found that another
group has planned a walk there in June. Glenn will reach out to the group and ask about a support.
Meeting adjourned at approximately 7:45 PM.
