7 Park&Trl Maintenance ReportCITYOF 612. O.~q I900 MEMORANDUM TO: Todd Hoffrnan, Park and Recreation Director FROM: Dale Gregory, Park Superintendent DATE: March 20, 2001 SUBJECT: Park and Trail Maintenance Report This year the skating season was the second longest (December 15 - March 6) since I have started keeping records back in 1982. I have included several reports this year related to the skating rinks. Ice rink user totals for thc five rink areas where warming houses arc present prepared by Corcy Hoen. · Skating rink usage: This is thc first year this report has been generated. We had the employees who were running the brooms fill out a sheet when the rinks were swept. They indicated if thc rinks were used or not from the last thnc they were swept. · Skating Rink Cost 1999-2000 and Skating Rink Cost 2000-2001: These two reports indicate the cost to build and maintain the city's ice skating rinks on a daily basis. The year 2000-2001cost was considerably more, however, we also were open twenty-two days longer. Construction on the new park maintenance building started January 29, 2001 and has been moxdng along at a steady pace. The building is up and the roof and shingles arc on. The building has been insulated and some of the interior walls and ceiling have the tin on. On the outside the brickwork has started on the east side. Currently thc inside of the building is being heated to remove the frost so the concrete floor can be installed. With the skating rinks closed, we will now have time to begin our preventative maintenance on all lawnmowers and weed whips. This winter's early freeze-up of the lakes and more than average snowfall required the installation of the aerator on Lake Susan. The system was started on January 23, 2001. Even though our oxygen readings were still fairly high, we decided to get a head start and begin aerating early. On February 19th we did have a problem with a broken shaft on the pump that took us until February 23rJ to repair and restart the system. The oxygen levels have continued to get lower throughout the winter. Our Park Foreman, Dean Schmieg, and Dave Gilbraith from thc DNR took a reading on March 15,2001, and found that the oxygen level is down to where we could possibly have some fish die. According to Dave Gilbraith, nothing is for certain yet, and it will all depend on the weather in the next few weeks. If it Th,' (.'itl' of Cha.hassc.. We have just completed the wood duck house cleaning and inspect/on. We have 35 wood duck houses in place with 16 being used last year, which is 46%. This is down from 1999.
