January minutes were approved.
Sustainability Report:
Commissioners had their section drafts ready at the meeting. It was agreed that each
commissioner should read through the sections and send any suggestions or revisions to Katie and copy the rest of
the commission. Additionally, if a team changes their section they should let the commission know and if anyone
learns something new that is of interest to one of the topics they should let the whole commission know. Section
summaries will be one paragraph with all sections included in a one-page summary. Each topics will be
encouraged to expand for the online format. The deadline for the final draft and summary is Monday, March 2.
Summaries should review recent projects and highlights within the topic area.
Arbor Day Poster Contest:
The commission brainstormed on runner-up prizes for the poster contest. The grand
prize winner will still receive a gift card from The Garden if they are willing to donate it again this year. Prize
ideas include books, seed planting kit, cacti or Venus fly trap. The commission will be selecting the winning
posters at the March meeting.
Arbor Day:
Katie and Amy O will be helping with creating the tree tags for the ash and other trees for the event.
The commission liked NY state’s tag for ash trees that read ‘This is at risk for EAB’. They’ll put tags on trees at
the event as well as Lake Ann and city center, possibly with the help the Chanhassen lacrosse team.
The photo contest will be advertised on the e-reader board, Village, website, and newsletter. The submittal
deadline will be June 8 and at the June 10 meeting the commission can select the top 5. The prize will probably
be the use of the photo for a newsletter cover or printed and hung for a year at city hall. Jill will adapt the city
photo contest rules for this contest and send out the revised rules to the commission for review. The contest can
be announced at the Arbor Day poster contest presentation at the April 27 council meeting.
Matthew will contact the library and set up a meeting to discus how the Chan library can help promote Arbor
Day. The photo contest can be promoted at the library too.
Villager Arbor Day article – Amy and Amy will write it. The deadline to finish it will be April 20 for submittal to
the paper by April 21.
The commission is interested in having a speaker on a tree topic such as tree care, tree selection, tree diversity,
EAB at the library. A possible date would be Saturday, May 9 at 10 am.
