Regular Meeting

Minutes:
April minutes were approved.
Arbor Day summary:
It was a great weather day and the turnout was good. Having the student musician from
MacPhail was great. The commission thinks that next year there should be more work for volunteers.
City Council Joint meeting summary:
The commission met with the City Council on May 11. AIS was
discussed and the council wondered if the Env. and P/R commissions could work together on the topic. Todd
Hoffman should be asked to give an update to the commission. Plastic bag recycling was also discussed. It had
been in the news recently and the council wondered if the commission could address the issue. The commission
then discussed how they could educate the public about the issue. It was decided that an article could be written
about the topic and a list of local resources for where to recycling plastic bags would be included. Katie
volunteered to write the article.
Joint tour:
Jill informed the commission that the Park and Rec commission had requested that the tour take place
in August instead of September this year. The commission agreed to do the tour in August and take the
September meeting off the calendar.
July 3 Trade Fair:
Brett, Glenn, and Matthew are available to work at the business expo on July 3. Dave may
also be available. They plan to have EAB info displayed as well as the photo contest finalists.
General Discussion
:
Someone suggested that the commission should take advantage of the large crowd at Feb Fest to promote
environmental education like AIS.
Jill informed the commission that the city applied for a buckthorn removal project through Great River
Greening. The city is waiting to hear if the project’s been accepted.
The commission wanted to know when the recycling carts would be distributed for use throughout the
parks. Jill told them they would begin placing the carts in late-May/early June.
Don asked if there was a way to make it easier for commissioners to get EC information and links to post
on Facebook.
