04-13-05 Minutes Chanhassen Environmental Commission (EC) Regular Meeting April 13, 2005 Meeting Called to order 6:30 p.m. Members Present: Marcus Zbinden, Dotti Shay, Lee Scholder, Ron Olsen, Kim Grant, David Wanek Members Absent: Jo Mueller Staff Present: Jill Sinclair, Environmental Resources Specialist, Don Asleson, Natural Resources Technician Approval of Minutes: The April minutes were approved. Introduction of new Commissioner: The Commissioners gave a brief introduction of themselves to Lee Scholder, the newly appointed commissioner. She shared information about her background and interests. Review By-laws: The commission reviewed the by-laws. No changes were made. They were approved unanimously. Election of Chair and Vice-Chair: Marcus was nominated for Chair. David Wanek was nominated for Vice-chair. Both were approved unanimously. 2005 Arbor Day poster contest: The commission reviewed all of the posters received from the schools and chose 7 top posters. Of those 7, one was selected as the grand prize winner. The first place poster was by Lauren Kohler from Bluff Creek Elementary. 2005 Arbor Day planning: Volunteers for the event will be Dotti, Ron, David and possibly Kim. Eureka Recycling Facility Tour: Marcus gave a re-cap of the tour. He said it was very informative and the facility was clean and well-run. Eureka Recycling does a great job of educating its customers. Since the tour, Carver county has switched to Eureka and is making more money from its recyclables. Recycling brochure/’Caught Recycling’ program: Marcus will bring in samples next month. The commission thought a presentation should be made to the council on the ‘Caught Recycling’ program. A city employee or a commissioner would roam around on a recycling day and give away some coupons to the recycling center if they see someone carrying out their recycling. A picture could be taken for submittal to the paper. General Discussion: There will be a joint meeting with the City Council on Monday, May 9. The commission decided to ? discuss 3 issues with them – caught recycling program, hybrid car purchases, and wind energy.
