09-14-05 Minutes Chanhassen Environmental Commission (EC) Regular Meeting September 14, 2005 Meeting Called to order 6:30 p.m. Members Present: Marcus Zbinden, Dotti Shay, Lee Scholder, Ron Olsen, Kim Grant, Jo Mueller Members Absent: Staff Present: Jill Sinclair, Environmental Resources Specialist Approval of Minutes: The minutes for the July 2005 meeting were approved. Pollution Prevention Week Planning: The commission won’t be able to pull together promotional material in time for the event. Dotti said the Villager will be running PR info from the state. Maybe Eureka recycling could come to a meeting to talk about new ways to promote recycling in the city. Wind Energy Update: Ron and Marcus updated the commission on the work they had done since the last meeting. They met with a city planner and found the areas within the city that are zoned to allow a wind turbine. The appropriate sites included the Arboretum and the school district site in southern Chanhassen. Ron talked with the school district and Marcus met with the Arboretum. Both entities were positive about the project, but the school district’s timing may be a little out of step with the commission’s timeline. The Arboretum appears to be the better alternative currently. Ron and Marcus will have a follow-up meeting with Arboretum officials to feel out commitment and the scale of a potential project. Chanhassen Recycles Day: recycling day will be Thursday, October 27 from 9 AM to 6 PM. The spring recycling day had 350 customers in total for the day, 250 of which were Chan residents. The event will be advertised in the Villager, on the cable channel and on the city website. EE Award: Nominations by the commission will be on the October agenda. The award was noted in the Chamber newsletter. General Discussion: Organized collection: Dotti thinks the commission should go to the City Council with the idea and ? promote rebates for recycling. Organized collection could event the amount people pay for waste hauling and the rebate could come back to the city. The commission would like to look into changing the ordinance to require recycling at multi-family units. At the next joint meeting with the council, the commission would like to put organized collection on the agenda. Meeting: The commission would like to change the monthly meeting date to the 2nd Tuesday of the ? month. The commission will vote on it in October. SWMP plan update: Lee updated the commission on the task force saying they had been shown a ? power point presentation on water quality and that there was a lot to be done in six months. Meeting adjourned at 8:00 pm Prepared and submitted by Jill Sinclair G:\PLAN\JS\EC\09-14-05MIN.doc
