CHANHASSEN ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
January 9, 2002
Meeting called to order by Dotti Shay at 7:05 p.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT:
Dotti Shay, Jo Mueller, Kim Hankins, Susan McAllister, Steve
Nalefski
MEMBERS ABSENT:
Deborah Yungner
STAFF PRESENT:
Jill Sinclair, Environmental Resources Coordinator, Lori Haak, Water
Resources Coordinator, Bob Ayotte, City Council liaison
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
No quorum for meeting in December. No minutes were
approved.
LIBRARY BOOKS:
Commission reviewed list of books compiled by members and looked at
the list of reference and children’s books requested by the library. The total cost of purchasing all
the books on the three lists was approximately equal to the $2500 budget existing for the books.
A motion to donate money to the Chanhassen library for the purchase of all books on the lists was
made by Mueller and seconded by Nalefski. All voted in favor. Sinclair will check with library as
to whether or not there is room currently for the books. A presentation with the library and the
commission will be organized for this spring or sooner.
APPLICANT INTERVIEW:
Ron Olsen was interviewed by the commission. He stated that he
would like to serve on the commission because of his interest in the natural resources and because
he’d like to be involved with the city. Some of his main environmental interests include
sustainability, tree planting, water quality, energy conservation and increasing recycling in the city.
Muelled moved, Nalefski seconded to appoint Olsen. All voted yes to recommend to the City
Council that Ron be appointed.
ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE AWARD:
Commission reviewed and discussed the six
applications. Someone suggested using Dragseths as Arbor Day speakers. Mueller made the
motion to award all applicants, Nalefski seconded. All voted yes. Businesses will receive
plaques, all others receive $50.
WORK PLAN:
Commission revised 2001 work plan month by month. Mueller suggested
project for spring: Put Arbor Day photo and an environmental quote on cloth shopping bags and
sell at local retailers. Commission would partner with a sponsor to fund the printing and
production. Hankins volunteered to talk to Target and Byerly’s about sponsorship and/or selling
bags. Need to contact schools early about poster contest. Commissioner should write newspaper
article about project. Update at February meeting.
GENERAL DISCUSSION:
Councilman Ayotte would like the EC to let the council know the points of interest they

have with the haulers. The commission can request the council to direct staff to determine
whether or not there are any problems with city ordinances or procedures.
The wetland issue televised on the news was discussed.

Susan McAllister read a resignation letter effective immediately. Everyone thanked her
?
for her service.
Members requested a copy of the rental housing draft ordinance or policy.
