CHANHASSEN ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
April 10, 2002
Meeting called to order by Dotti Shay at 7:15 p.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT:
Dotti Shay, Jo Mueller, Kim Hankins, Deborah Yungner, Ron Olsen
MEMBERS ABSENT:
Steve Nalefski
STAFF PRESENT:
Jill Sinclair, Environmental Resources Coordinator, Lori Haak, Water
Resources Coordinator
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
March minutes were approved with changes.
NEW MEMBER INTERVIEW:
Kim Grant interviewed with the Commission. She said she’d
like to join the commission because it would make her feel more a part of the community and
because she loves the outdoors and Chanhassen parks. One of the biggest environmental issues in
her neighborhood is the amount of trash that is left on the streets after garbage collection. She’d
like to see the high environmental quality of Chanhassen maintained and learn more about
recycling and garbage collection in the city. She said she saw the EE Award article in the paper
and it piqued her interest.
Kim moved to recommend her to the Council, Ron seconded. All in favor.
BY-LAWS:
The following changes were suggested:
Section 2.1: The meeting time will be 6:30 pm, city hall address is 7700 Market Blvd., end time
of meeting will be 8:30 pm
Section 2.3: The first sentence shall read “…members shall attend not less than 75% of all regular
meetings.”
CHAIR/VICE-CHAIR ELECTIONS:
Dotti Shay was nominated for Chair. Jo Mueller was
nominated as Vice-Chair. All in favor.
ARBOR DAY:
Jill asked for volunteers for the day, with 10am to noon being the most critical
time. Ron, Dotti, and Jo volunteered. Kim will be out of town. Lunch suggestions were: V8
Splash and water instead of pop, baby carrots, chips, and turkey and all beef pareve hot dogs.
SHOPPING BAG PROJECT:
Byerly’s still needs to be confirmed as a sales location. Festival
is a yes, Target a no. Jill will call Byerly’s. Member reviewed the bag design layout. Suggestions
were to bring out the owl more and fix the ‘s’ in trees and inside. The final cost per bag is $8.50,
150 are ordered. The bags will be sold for $5. Dotti volunteered to make a banner for the sales
table that reads “Celebrate Earth Day every time you shop!” The sales schedule is 10 am to 3 pm.
Jill will make the schedule and send it to the members. Jill will ask Virginia Chan if she could
come and autograph bags for an hour or two. Displays on the tables will include the banner
across the front, green and white table cloths, bags filled with groceries on the tables, posted of
the strib article about recycling plastic bags and the environmental commission and the 3R’s. The
packet put in the bags will include waste and recycling info from the OEA and Carver County.
Deborah volunteered to pick up the materials from the OEA. The marketing plan will include a
general article the week before the sales about the bags and when they’ll be sold. Deborah will

contact the Villager. Then the presentation by the Council and Commission on the 22 will be in
the paper the following week and it will include information about bags for sale on Arbor Day and
in city hall. Lunch bags and mugs will be delivered to the students and teachers who participated
in the poster contest. Steve can deliver them?
CLIMB THEATER UPDATE:
Jill reported that all but one of the schools is scheduled for a
presentation from Climb. Dotti said Climb gave a presentation about the theater to the county
board and it was very good. It was suggested that Climb come to a council work session in
September. Jo will contact them. Jill will notify the Villager with the spring presentation
schedule for the schools.
GENERAL DISCUSSION:
Blue Sky Guide. The commission would like to move forward with plans to distribute the

book to new residents and others. Jill will find out how many new residents move in each
year. Orders for the guide need to be placed by July. The item will be added to the June
agenda.
Deborah notified the commission that there is a meeting on April 18, 7 pm, at Chaska
?
High School concerning an air emissions permit for a pesticide company in Chaska. She
said her neighborhood has been effected. She thought everyone should try to make it.
