CHANHASSEN ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
January 10, 2001
Meeting called to order by Dotti Shay at 7:05 p.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT:
Jack Atkins, Jo Mueller, Dotti Shay, Susan McAllister
MEMBERS ABSENT:
Sharon Beduhn, Clay Smith, Peder Otterson
STAFF PRESENT:
Jill Sinclair, Environmental Resource Specialist
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes from the December 13th meeting were approved.
GUEST SPEAKER:
Marcus Zbinden, Carver County Environmental Services, was unable to
attend the meeting. His presentation will be rescheduled for next month.
ARBOR DAY 2001:
The Commission decided to have the event on May 5. Jill will begin
contacting presenters next week. Possible presenters include: Nature’s Critters, Susan M., Uli
S., master gardeners, Carver County Environmental Services, Garden Club, Brownie/Girl scouts,
local garden centers, OEA, DNR. We will have a tree sale again. A suggestion was made to have
something for sale by the EC to raise money for purchasing books for the library. Jack offered to
contact the Legion in regards to securing funds for the project. Jill will check with the library to
see if there will be a book sale on that date.
2001 CALENDAR:
The Commission started to fill in the work plan for 2001. Planning was
done for Jan. – September. The work plan will be reviewed again at next month’s meeting to
complete the year and review what was proposed. In reviewing the calendar, it was decided that
the deadline for the Environmental Excellence award will be Arbor Day. It seemed too long a
period between Jan. 31, the original deadline, and July 3, when the award is presented. The
beginning of May was the compromise, since the award date could not change.
GENERAL DISCUSSION:
Jack shared articles of interest with commissioners: “Creative
Destruction” about scrap metal reclamation and “The Science of Smart Growth” about curbing
urban sprawl. Copies were made for those who were interested. Jack also brought a Williams-
Sonoma catalog to show the kitchen compost bucket as an idea for the prize for residential
Environmental Excellence award winners.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
