06-27-01 Minutes CHANHASSEN ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING June 27, 2001 Meeting called to order by Dotti Shay at 7:08 p.m. MEMBERS PRESENT: Dotti Shay, Jo Mueller, Susan McAllister, Sharon Beduhn, Clay Smith MEMBERS ABSENT: Kim Hankins STAFF PRESENT: Jill Sinclair, Environmental Resource Specialist, Lori Haak, Water Resources Coordinator, Gina Moody, Planning Dept. Intern APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes from 6/23 and 5/11 were approved. INTRODUCTION: Haak introduced Gina to the Commissioners and described the projects Gina has been working on which will include the Longacres project. REVIEW GOALS: Commissioners wanted to add the July 4 parade to the 2002 work plan. Perhaps the EE Award winners could ride on a float. Shay suggested that Chapter 3 of the Comp. Plan should be reviewed to see if there are additional goals for the commission. The commission would like to prepare information on haulers to be distributed during pollution prevention week. The citywide survey should be deleted from the commission’s goals. Mueller thought that the time frame of the goals should be stated, as in Jan.-Dec. or Apr.-May. REVIEW BY-LAWS: The commission confirmed that their focus is to be on education rather than making policy. Additions to the by-laws: section 3.1 - add city council liaison clause, add mayor’s signature. Smith moved to approve with additions, Mueller seconded. All in favor. LIBRARY BOOKS: A presentation from Hankins will be put on the July agenda. Sinclair will check to see if there is a time limit for spending the funds and the status of library shelf space. TRADE FAIR: The commissioners will be unable to attend the trade fair, but will exhibit a display board. GENERAL DISCUSSION: ? Longacres update: Mueller and Hankins will find out the date for the next neighborhood newsletter and submit an article that includes an invitation for volunteers who would use low/no P fertilizer. They plan on following up the article with a brochure or pledge card sent to all addresses in the neighborhood. Moody questioned how quickly project results would be seen since it may take so long that interest would wane. Haak said that the focus should be on the fact that lawns will still look good without P. A handout with a drainage map showing where the water from each property goes would also be a useful and interesting tool. There is a neighborhood picnic in August and the Commission should have an exhibit at the function. ? Hauler rates: Dotti will call businesses for their rates. ? City Newsletter: Commission would like to include ‘ad’ for EC. “Zero Waste: Think about it. Call the Environmental Commission for more information.” Also something on Waste Free Fridays. ? Adopt-A-Hwy.: the commission should adopt a section in the county. Meeting was adjourned at 8:54 p.m. Prepared and Submitted by Jill Sinclair G:\PLAN\JS\EC\EC01\06-27-01MIN.doc
