CHANHASSEN ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
June 14, 2000
Meeting called to order by Dotti Shay at 7:10 p.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT:
Dotti Shay, Jack Atkins, Sharon Beduhn, Susan McAllister
MEMBERS ABSENT:
Clay Smith, Jo Mueller
STAFF PRESENT:
Jill Sinclair, Environmental Resources Specialist, Todd Hoffman, Parks and
Recreation Director
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes from the May 10 were approved, with the addition of
Sharon Beduhn to ‘Members Present’.
GUEST SPEAKER:
Todd Hoffman, Park and Rec. Director, presented an overview of what
the department and commission is currently working on. He stated that the policies of Park and
Rec. have been consistent for the last 10 years – acquire parkland. The land south of the bluffs is
not on the dept.’s agenda to acquire, it will be left to the state or federal agencies to acquire.
There are a couple of different ways to acquire land. First, land can be donated through
development, known as dedication. Todd says this hasn’t happened in 12 years. Secondly, land
can be purchased. Currently, Parks is trying to acquire the Frank Fox parcel, 34 acres, through
condemnation. The land would be used as a passive park with trails. Open space funds after the
Fox purchase will be used to buy another piece of land. The Edwards piece (at the corner of
Lyman and Audubon) was acquired using SWMP funds. Preferably, the city tries to go for a fee
title.
Todd also mentioned that the Memorial Arboretum Task Force is looking for committee
members. Dotti and Susan volunteered.
LIBRARY TASK FORCE:
Possibly Clay or Jo would like to volunteer.
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD PROGRAM:
Members present decided that the whole
commission should be in attendance to discuss program. Perhaps there needs to be a special
meeting to discuss it. However, members feel that it should be promoted at the July 3 trade fair
therefore, timing is critical and the program needs to be presented to the city council and chamber
of commerce. The council meeting is June 26, the chamber meeting is June 20. It was decided
the Commission would have to discuss the program through e-mail. Sharon will revise the
documents and Jill will distribute it to the Commission once she’s done.
GENERAL DISCUSSION:
The Commission won’t be assisting the city in putting togther lawn
and yard information for the water ban. Since the ban seems to be changing so often, it seems
best that the engineering department handle all the details.
Dotti will be checking to see if there is any available information yet about this year’s Pollution
Prevention week. If there is, we will try to get it into the fall city newsletter.
The EC website needs to be updated with information about current members, the environmental
excellence award, etc.
Meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
