CHANHASSEN ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
December 13, 2000
Meeting called to order by Dotti Shay at 7:05 p.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT:
Jack Atkins, Dotti Shay, Sharon Beduhn, Susan McAllister
MEMBERS ABSENT:
Jo Mueller, Clay Smith, Peder Otterson
STAFF PRESENT:
Lori Haak, Water Resources Coordinator, Jill Sinclair, Environmental
Resource Specialist
GUESTS PRESENT:
Mayor-elect Linda Jansen stopped in to say thank you to the
Commissioners and wish them happy holidays.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Minutes from the November 8th meeting were approved.
HOLIDAY WASTE ARTICLE:
Clay wrote a good article for the Villager and it sent to the
th
paper on Monday, December 11. It should show up in this or next week’s edition.
ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE AWARD PROGRAM:
Jill said she’s received two
calls for applications. Over 200 notices were sent out to local businesses and groups. It’s
unknown if applications are being downloaded from the web site. After this award process the
Commission will need to review the application requirements and procedure to make sure it’s
easy and clear. Jack suggested a compost pot from Williams Sonoma be the residential prize. For
the business/commercial winners, a trophy might be best with a plaque in City Hall listing each
years winners.
PILOT NEIGHBORHOOD WETLAND BUFFER PROJECT:
Lori said she and Jo
submitted an article to the Longacres newsletter. A copy of it was included in this month’s
packet. Lori suggested that the Commission focus on education and awareness for 2001 and to
wait on starting wetland projects until 2002. Neighborhood meeting and wetland testing could be
done this next year. Commissioners agreed with that approach.
CLIMB THEATER UPDATE:
Jill reviewed past performances from Climb: fall 1999 – Trash,
spring 2000 – Toadilly Turtle. Each play was presented at Excelsior, Clear Springs, Chapel Hill,
and St. Hubert’s. This year Trash will be presented again. Dotti mentioned that we need to get
pictures of the presentation.
DISCUSSION OF HAULER SERVICES:
Lori shared information that she received from
Carver County. Most surprising was that the majority of Chanhassen’s waste goes to Spirit Lake,
IA. There were a lot of questions and concerns about the data. It was agreed that marcus
Zbinden should be invited to the next meeting to try to answer some of them. In the
Commission’s review of hauler services, composting should be tied in. Perhaps information from
the programs in Hutchinson and/or Hennepin County would be helpful.
DISCUSSION OF ORGANIC COMPOSTING PILOT PROGRAM:
The Commission
thought this issue should be included in the hauler discussions.
GENERAL DISCUSSION:
Happy Holidays were wished to all.
Meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
