SENIOR COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
April 18, 2O03
Chairman Geving called the meeting to order at 10:00a.m. and welcomed Commissioner
Pat McGough.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Dale Geving, Mel Kurvers, Tom Faust, Jean Mancini, Bobbie
Headla, Albin Olson, and Pat McGough.
MEMBERS ABSENT: None.
STAFF PRESENT: Sharmeen A1-Jaff, Senior Planner.
APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA: Chairman Geving moved to add the Senior Expo as a
9th item to the agenda and move the approval of the Senior Commission Bylaws as item
#2 and the Election of Officers as item #3. Commissioner Mancini moved,
Commissioner Kurvers Seconded the motion to approve the agenda as amended. All
voted in favor and the motion camed. Commissioner Faust moved to approve the
agenda. Commissioner Kurvers seconded the motion. All voted in favor and the motion
was carded.
APPROVAL OF SENIOR COMMISSION BYLAWS: The commission discussed
limiting the number of terms served as well as procedural matters. Chairman Geving
moved to amend Section 3 - Commission Composition - Terms and Vacancies to read as
follows:
3.2 Terms and Vacancies. The City Council shall appoint seven members to the
commission for terms of three years. No member shall serve more than three (3)
consecutive terms, not to exceed nine (9) years. Vacancies during the term shall be filled
by the Council for the unexpired portion of the term. Every appointed member shall, before
entering upon the charge of his/her duties take an oath that he/she will faithfully discharge
the duties of his/her office. All members shall serve without compensation.
Commission Faust moved, seconded by Commissioner Kervers, all voted in favor and the
motion carded.
Section 4 - Organization
4.1 Election of Officers. The first meeting in April of each year, the Senior Commission
shall hold an organizational meeting. At this meeting, the Commission shall elect from
its membership a chairperson and vice-chairperson. This shall be done by voice vote.
Vice-Chairperson shall be elected from the remaining members by the same proceeding.
If the Chairperson retires from the Senior Commission before the next regular
organizational meeting, the Vice-Chairperson shall be Chairperson. If both
Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson retire, new officers shall be elected at the next
regular meeting. If both Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson are absent from a meeting,
the Commission shall elect a temporary Chairperson by voice vote. The newly elected
officers will begin serving their seats in the month of May.
Section 5 - Procedure
5.2 Commission meeting shall follow an agenda prepared by staff.
SERVICES DIRECTORY: The commission directed staff to expand the existing
"Chanhassen Resident Guide" to include senior oriented information. The commission
prefers using the term Resource Manual.
CONGREGATE DINING & MEALS ON WHEELS: The number of clients has been
holding steady at 15 meals per day.
UPDATE ON SENIOR ACTIVITIES: See attachment 1.
SENIOR AWARENESS MONTH: Activities will be held. The Senior Commission will
hand out Chanhassen History Books, Chanhassen Resident Guides, and possibly a
painting to be donated by Kay Faust.
SENIOR COMMENTS: None.
