Administrative Report
The following work items have recently been completed, are underway, or are
newsworthy.
Operations and Maintenance Budget: The department's 2007 operations and
maintenance budget is complete and has been submitted to the City Manager.
Our budget is proposed to increase by 2.84% from $1,744,300 to $1,793,800, a
difference of $49,500. The majority of the increase is attributable to an increase
in staffing hours at the Senior Center from 24 to 28 per .week, additional utility
costs at Lake Ann Park to operate the new ball filed lights, and wages and
benefits. I will review our operations and maintenance budget with the City
Council at the October 22Dd work session.
Park and TrailAequisition8nd Development CIP:Staff has submitted the
Commission'.s proposed IO-year Park and Trail Acquisition and Development
CIP to the Finance Department. The City Council will review this document as
a component of their overall budget deliberations over the next three months.
2030 Comprehensive Plan: The final draft of the parks and recreation section
of the 2030 comprehensive plan, with amendments from the commission, has
been submitted to the Community Development Department. The Planning
Commission will hold. a public hearing on the parks and recreation section on
October 16th. Members of the commission are encouraged to attend the public
hearing.
Park Inventory Update: City staff, in coordination with the Hoisington
Koegler Group, has performed a complete overhaul of the department's park
master plan and inventory. This 160 page document includes an up-to-date
aerial image of every park in the community with a corresponding inventory
sheet.
The City of Chanhassen . A growing community with clean lakes, quality schools, a charming downtown, thriving businesses, winding trails, and beautiful parks. A great place to live, work, and play.

Lake Ann Park Improvement Projects: Contract documents for both the ball
field lighting and picnic shelter projects are complete. Preparations leading up
to breaking ground on both projects are underway. The majority of work on
both projects is anticipated to be completed in October and November.
Fall Tree Planting: Staff is coordinating an extensive fall tree planting project.
City Center Park, Lake Ann Park, Lake Susan Park and the Recreation Center
are on tap to receive some new trees. Above normal loss was experienced this
past summer as a result of the extended dry weather.
Carver County Blue Cross Blue Shield Healthy Communities Grant: Staff
is cooperating with Carver County in an effort to electronically map all trails
within the county. This initiative is one component of a healthy communities
grant. Chanhassen, largely through the efforts of GIS specialist Joleen Devens,
has taken a lead position in these efforts. .
Power Hill Park Trail Project: The trail is built and our maintenance division
recently completed restoration work associated with the project. This trail
segment represents another valuable addition to our expanding trail network.
Recreation Center Ball Field Addition: Storm damage clean-up restricted our
ability to initiate this project. Now that clean-up is largely complete, we are
setting our sights on beginning the ball field project at the Recreation Center.
The Preserve Trail and Bridge: We anticipate that construction will
commence on an 80-foot pedestrian bridge and phase two of the preserve trail in
the coming weeks. (See correspondence in administrative section.)
Minnewashta Regional Park Off-Leash Dog Area: Carver County recently
returned the city's caterpillar dozer after borrowing it to work on the Lake
Minnewashta off-leash dog area. The new, much anticipated, attraction is
anticipated to open late this year.
Chanhassen Nature Preserve Trail and Bridge: The final phase of the
Chanhassen Nature Preserve trail and bridge is staked and ready for
construction. City staff, working in cooperation with the developer's
engineering team, has invested time in the layout and staking of this project over
the past two weeks. Construction will be ongoing through the winter.
Chanhassen High School: Chaska School District 112 has announced that the
football/track stadium and two practice fields locat~d at the new Chanhassen
High School will feature artificial turf. In the quest to increase overall athletic
field capacity in our community, this represents a very significant investment.
