REGULAR MEETING
SUMMARY MINUTES
OCTOBER 23, 2007
Chairman Stolar called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m..
MEMBERS PRESENT:
Glenn Stolar, Steve Scharfenberg, Thor Smith, Paula Atkins and Jeff
Daniel
MEMBERS ABSENT:
Tom Kelly and Dan Campion
STAFF PRESENT:
Todd Hoffman, Park and Rec Director; Jerry Ruegemer, Recreation
Superintendent; and John Stutzman, Recreation Supervisor
Commission members Atkins, Scharfenberg, and Smith gave updates on the project tours that
occurred prior to the meeting of the off leash dog area, Rec Center ballfield construction, and the
Lake Ann Park picnic shelter and ballfield lighting projects. Todd Hoffman gave an update on
the progress of the construction projects at Lake Ann Park.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA:Scharfenberg moved, Daniel seconded to approve the agenda,
amended to include an update under commission member presentations by Commissioner
Atkins on the Arts Council meeting and the Halloween Party update. All voted in favor
and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 5 to 0.
PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTS:
John Stutzman reminded the commission of the Halloween

Party on Saturday, October 27 and asked for volunteers.
VISITOR PRESENTATIONS:
None.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:Daniel moved, Scharfenberg seconded to approve the
verbatim and summary minutes of the Park and Recreation Commission meeting dated
September 25, 2007 as presented. All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously
with a vote of 5 to 0.

2008 FOURTH OF JULY - 25 ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION.
Jerry Ruegemer
presented the staff report on this item, reviewing what activities have taken place over the years,

and asked for suggestions for the 25 anniversary celebration. Commissioner Scharfenberg
asked about hosting a softball tournament. Commissioner Daniel suggested showcasing
landmark features of the city and important events that have occurred over the last 25 years.
Commissioner Atkins asked about t-shirts and incorporating the design of the first t-shirt. The
commission discussed ways to promote and advertise the event by displaying past t-shirts at local
businesses and activities throughout the week leading up to the celebration throughout the
community. Commissioner Daniel suggested having a beach concert at Lake Ann Beach.

Chairman Stolar suggested doing events 25 days leading up to the 25 celebration. Todd

Hoffman displayed all the t-shirts that have been collected from the past 24 years. Activities
such as a dunk tank, all night softball tournament, family games, teen band and the theme for the
parade and celebration were discussed.
RECREATION PROGRAM REPORTS:
2007 PICNIC SITE EVALUATION.
Jerry Ruegemer reported that overall it was another
successful picnic season with the number of picnic users and revenues up. Commissioner
Atkins asked to see a drawing at the next meeting of the picnic shelter being construct at the
Parkview site. Chairman Stolar suggested doing routine maintenance to clean up some of the
shelters, and providing recycling bins at the picnic sites.
2007 TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY.
John Stutzman reminded the commission of the tree

lighting ceremony which will be held on Saturday, December 1 from 5:00 to 6:00.
COMMISSION MEMBER PRESENTATIONS.
Paula Atkins updated the commission on the
progress of the Arts Council meetings.
ADMINISTRATIVE PACKET.
None.
Daniel moved, Scharfenberg seconded to adjourn the meeting. All voted in favor and the
motion carried unanimously with a vote of 5 to 0.
