Administrative Report
This time of year traditionally brings with it opportunities to celebrate the past
and look forward to the future. The Chanhassen Park and Recreation
Commission has a forty ye~ history of quietly putting into place one of the
premier municipal park and recreation systems in the state! These years are
marked by many milestones, including the acquisition and development of five
community parks totaling 190 acres and featuring public water accesses on
3 lakes, the acquisition and development of twenty-two neighborhood parks
totaling 200 acres, and the acquisition of fourteen park preserves totaling
460 acres. In addition, the commission has been in the forefront of the
development of a comprehensive trail system with over 55 miles in place and
more on the way.
Each and everyone of these milestones required a significant investment of
resources in order to be accomplished. Many hands were put to work in order to
realize these success stories. For your understanding and continued
commitment to these worthy causes, I would like to say thank you - we have
much to celebrate! Now I would like to set your sights on the following work
for 2008 and beyond.
PARKS
"Unnamed" Park Preserve: This 37-acre property was acquired in 1999 and is
located south of Lyman Boulevard, just east of new Highway 212. The property
is heavily wooded and contains approximately eight acres of wetlands.
Properties surrounding the park are slated for development starting in 2010.
Upcoming tasks include naming the preserve and initiating a park master plan.
2005 MUSA Area Neighborhood Park Acquisition: In keeping with our plan
to acquire and develop a neighborhood park within Y2-mile of every home in
Chanhassen, we need to continue our efforts to acquire a neighborhood park in
the 2005 MUSA area.
The City ot Chanhassen · A growing community with clean lakes, quality schools, a channing downtown, thriving businesses, winding trails, and beautiful parks. A great place to live, work, and play.

Disc Golf Course: Efforts to identify a location for and to develop a disc golf
course in town need to continue.
Ball Field Space: Our comprehensive plan update identifies a future shortage in
community ball field space. What plans can be put in place to ensure that we
meet our future needs? Should the community pursue the construction of a
baseball stadium?
Lake Ann Park Expansion: Future plans call for a significant expansion of
Lake Ann Park. What can be done today to ensure that these plans are realized?
Rice Marsh Lake Hwy. 312/212 Excess Right-of-Way (ROW): The City of
Chanhassen needs to actively continue efforts to acquire excess ROW located
between Rice Marsh Lake and new Highway 312/212. This area is heavily
wooded and is one the largest remaining forested areas in the City.
TRAILS
Highway 101 North Trail Connection: Initial construction of the
Highway 101 north trail stopped at Pleasant View Road. Another project is
scheduled for 2009 to finish the remaining 1,400 feet. In addition, this project
will include a section of trail along Pleasant View Road from Highway 101 west
to an existing trail connection.
Chanhassen Nature Preserve Trail, Phase IV: This project is currently
underway and includes 2,200 feet of pedestrian trail and a bridge. Steiner
Development is responsible for the management of the project per their
development agreement with the City of Chanhassen. We pay the costs
associated with the project using funds in the park and trail dedication fund.
Highway 41 Pedestrian Underpass/Trail Grant Match: Carver County is the
lead agency on this project and the most recent grant application ranked
favorably. Projects have not been selected for funding at this time. Martin
Walsh, Carver County Parks Director, will contact us when he hears more.
Lyman Boulevard Trail Improvements: The Lyman Boulevard trail project is
currently the most anticipated trail in the city. Planning and engineering work
has already been initiated with actual construction starting next year. The first
phase of the project will include a pedestrian underpass at Bluff Creek.
Bluff Creek Gap Trail: This 4,000-foot section of trail will complete a second
connection to the southern Hennepin County Regional Trail Corridor.

Pioneer Boulevard Gap Trail: This 4,200-ft. segment of trail is one of the last
remaining trail sections to be constructed along Pioneer Trail within the cities of
Eden Prairie, Chanhassen and Chaska.
RECREATION
Chanhassen Recreation Center: Efforts to reinvent the operations at the
Recreation Center will continue into 2008 and beyond.
Carver County Healthy Communities Initiative: Through a Blue Cross/Blue
Shield grant, cities in Carver County have teamed up with the county to roll out
a healthy community's initiative. Trail mapping and trail expansions are a key
component of this program.
Arts Council: This newly formed group will need the support of the
commiSSion.
Community Theater: The new Chanhassen High School will provide a
premier theater space to the community. Is community theater in Chanhassen
next?
This list represents a good start for the coming years - what else should be
added? I look forward to working with the commission on these and other
projects!
