Senior Commission Meeting Schedule
The Chanhassen Senior Commission typically meets on the third Friday of each
month. As I have pointed out in the past, you are to be congratulated and
commended on having accomplished all of your goals(Senior Center, Expanded
Senior Center, Senior Housing, Senior Dining, Meals on Wheels, Senior Parking
Signs, Information and Referral, etc).
Our recent meetings have consisted of a summary of Senior Center Activities.
The main role oftheSeniorCoIl1Il1ission is toseI"VeasM advisory body to the City
Council in addressing the special needs. of the people over 55 living in Chanhassen.
-
At this point, the Senior Commission has nb pressing projects. Staff is
recommending that the Commission meet on bimonthly, quarterly, or twice a year
bases unless an urgent matter present itself, then the commission can call a special
meeting.
I also need to point out that the Carver County Senior Commission meets on the
third Friday of January, March, May, July, September, and November. Our
representati ves have been missing the county meetings since they have been
attending the Chanhassen Senior Commission meetings.
Recommendation
Option One
The Commission shall meet quarterly on the third Friday of February, May, August,
and November (this option conflicts with the county meetings).
Option Two
The Commission shall meet bimonthly onthethirdFridayofFebruary, April, June,
August, October, and December.
Option Three _
The Commission shall meet twice a year on the 3rd Friday of February and August.

Senior Commission
September 15, 2003
WHA T IS WORKING?
. All our commissioners are courteous and have a strong interest in Chanhassen,
especially the cares and concerns of our senior citizens.
. We strive to continue to work on our goals. We all have a strong relationship with
our fellow commissions.
. We continue to work with all of the Carver County mayors and township supervisors
to form a service commission for all the towns based on our Chanhassen Commission
formula.
. Our new survey that focused on finding out the needs of our senior community.
WHA T IS NOT WORKING?
. We seem to have the same goals year after year, some we can do something about,
others we can't. For example, lack of control over affordable life-cycle housing.
WHA T WOULD THE COMMISSION DO TO IMPROVE THOSE THINGS THAT
ARE NOT WORKING?
. Some of the things that are not working are really out of our hands, such as affordable
housing, assisted living, transportation, and more space for our Senior Center.
. We wish to find a method for identifying seniors in the Chanhassen community.
. When appropriate, the Senior Commission should be notified, at a point early in the
process, to allow for participation on a proactive basis. This would help us be aware
of senior issues and needs as stated under "Defining Our Role."
WHA T ARE THE COMMISSION'S EXPECT A TIONS OF THE CITY
COUNCIL?
. To be aware of what our goals are, both old and new.
. To realize we have a large population of senior citizens, who need affordable
housing, assisted living, etc., so they can stay in Chanhassen, which may have
been their home for 50 plus years.
· We request the city council to be aware of our needs for the Senior Center in
allowing us the use of the old library. .
HOW DOES THE COMMISSION DEFINE THEIR ROLE?
· We are a group that strives to be aware of our senior citizen needs.
· We get involved in Chanhassen, not only just as commissioners, but also in other
areas of community life.
· Our commissioners all share a common interest for the needs of the seniors and
specifically those issues that would enhance the possibility for seniors to remain
in their community as long as feasible.
· We are the liaison between the City Council and the senior population.
· We act as advisors to the City Council.
