SENIOR COMMISSION MINUTES REGULAR MEETING February 17, 2006 Chairman Robinson called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m. MEMBERS PRESENT: Mel Kurvers, Bobbie Headla, and Jean Mancini, Curt Robinson, Pat McGough, and Marilyn Luthy. MEMBERS ABSENT: Dale Geving. STAFF PRESENT: Sharmeen AI-Jaff and Susan Bill. VISITORS: Gary Boyle, Commander of the Chanhassen American Legion Post 580. Approval of agenda: Mancini moved, Luthy seconded the motion to approve the minutes. All voted in favor and the motion carried. Approval of Minutes dated August 19, 2005: Kurvers moved, McGough seconded the motion to approve the minutes. All voted in favor and the motion carried. Veteran's Memorial for Chanhassen: Chairman Robinson introduced Gary Boyle, Commander of the Chanhassen American Legion Post 580. Commander Boyle was briefed on the Senior Commission's desire to have a Veteran's Memorial in the City of Chanhassen. A question was asked of the American Legion Post 580 to participate in the cost of the memorial. The wording on the memorial was discussed and it was concluded that it should be inclusive of all veterans. Commissioner Mancini will research materials. The Commission discussed the use of polished granite for the memorial. Potential locations for the memorial included City Center Park and Old Village Hall. The commission discussed the memorials in Excelsior and Chaska. Update on Volunteer Opportunities: There has been volunteer opportunities through the library. Updated on Senior Parking sign: Chairman Robinson will contact Park Nicollet for senior parking signs. Senior Commission Update: The advisory board attendance is good and there are eight members. There will be monthly Senior Commission meetings until the work on the Veteran's Memorial is complete. The City has received three applications for vacancies on the Senior Commission. Chairman Robinson thanked Commissioner Headla for her years of service on the Commission. Adjournment: Commissioner Mancini moved to adjourn the meeting. Commissioner Kurvers seconded the motion. Update on Volunteer Opportunities: Computer lessons at the senior center have begun. Bakery goods are being delivered to food shelf and group homes. Updated on Senior Parking sign: Target does not want senior signs. Senior Commission Update: The Senior Commission directed staff to do an open house on behalf of the senior commission. They will host a free continental breakfast. The event should be advertised in the paper one week prior to the actual event. Adjournment: Commissioner Mancini moved to adjourn the meeting. SENIOR COMMISSION MINUTES OPEN HOUSE October 21, 2005 The Senior Commission had an open house on October 21,2005. Approximately 60 seniors from the community attended the meeting. The open house focused on services available in the City of Chanhassen. The attendees expressed a need for more public transportation. A consultant with Carver County Health Partnership was present at the meeting. She provided an overview of the issues facing seniors in Carver County.
