SENIOR COMMISSION MINUTES
REGULAR MEETING
July 20, 2007

Chairman Robinson called the meeting to order at 10:00 a.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Curt Robinson, Pat McGough, Charlie Robbins, Carol
Buesgens, Barbara Nevin.
MEMBERS ABSENT: Jean Mancini, Virginia Prior.
STAFF PRESENT: Sharmeen AI-Jaff.
VISITORS: Katy Boone, Public Health Planner.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Chairman Robinson added Transportation and change to
the name of the senior center to the agenda. Commissioner Robbins moved,
Commissioner McGough seconded the motion. All voted in favor and the motion
carried.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: It was noted that Commissioner Buesgens was not present
and former Commissioner Luthy needed to be removed. Commissioner Nevin moved,
Commissioner Robbins seconded to approve the minutes. All voted in favor and the
motion carried. .
COMMISSIONER ROBISON ENTRODUCED AND WELCOMED KA TY BOONE:
Katy Boone stated that Carver County is the second largest county in the state of Minnesota
in terms of Senior Population. The first is Scott County. The current Carver County senior
population is 5,000. In 2030, the senior population in the county is expected to increase to
20,000. Katy Boone was hired by Carver County as a Public Health Planner, located in the
Public Health Division. The creation of the Office of Aging and the decision to locate it
in the Public Health Division was based on a recommendation from the Carver County
Health Partnership's Senior Commission. The Senior Commission recently completed a
"Master Plan to Create A Community for a Lifetime in Carver County" based on the
work of eight Design Teams over the past year.
The Master Plan on Aging addresses Housing and Adaptive Reuse of Housing,
Transportation and Mobility, Health and Long-Term Care, Civic Engagement and
V olunteerism, Parks and Recreation, Education and Learning, Home and Community-
Based Services, and Safety.
Sharmeen AI-Jaff stated that Sue Bill, Senior Center Coordinator, suggested the
Chanhassen Senior Commission hosts a meeting that includes all Carver County Senior
Commissions. The commission welcomed the idea and suggested they host the meeting
on October 19, 2007. Katy Boone volunteered to coordinate the event. The meeting will
focus on exchanging thoughts and ideas, issues that are facing commissions, etc.

SENIOR COMMISSION OPEN HOUSE-FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2007: The
commission will sponsor its third annual open house. There will be a free continental
breakfast on Friday, September 21,2007 at 9:00 a.m. The open house will be held at the
Chanhassen Senior Center. Bagels will be served between 9:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Check
with Jean Mancini to find out if her friend can play the Piano. Check with the following
places to see if they can donate donuts, bagels or bars: cr s, Lake Winds, Caribou, Star
Bucks.
The focus of this open house will be Safety. The program will consist of a presentation
by Ed Coppersmith, Chanhassen's Fire Inspector/Deputy Fire Marshal regarding In
Home Emergency Preparedness and the launching of the I.C.E. program. The
commission discussed issues that may be beneficial to seniors such as How to use a fire
extinguisher, smoke, radon, carbon monoxide detector, etc.
This presentation will be followed by a Congregate Dining Lunch. Following the lunch
hour, Gary Motzko, Security and Fraud Manager, Klein Corporation, will give a
presentation on Fraud and Identity Theft.
SENIOR COMMISSION COMMENTS: The commission readdressed the potential of
giving the senior center a new name. Staff explained that they are wants to listen to the
commission's thoughts on the matter. There are
