REGULAR MEETING
SUMMARY MINUTES
DECEMBER 9, 2008
Chairman Daniel called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT:
Jeff Daniel, Tom Kelly, Glenn Stolar, Steve Scharfenberg, Scott
Wendt, Thor Smith and Dan Campion
STAFF PRESENT:
Todd Hoffman, Park and Rec Director; Jerry Ruegemer, Recreation
Superintendent; John Stutzman, Recreation Supervisor; Susan Bill, Senior Center Coordinator;
Jodi Sarles, Recreation Center Manager; and Dale Gregory, Park Superintendent
APPROVAL OF AGENDA:Stolar moved, Wendt seconded to approve the agenda,
amended by Todd Hoffman to include a conversation about the updated park dedication
fund history projections under Administrative Reports. All voted in favor and the motion
carried unanimously with a vote of 7 to 0.
PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTS:
None.
VISITOR PRESENTATIONS:
None.
VOLUNTEER RECOGINITION PROGRAM.
Jerry Ruegemer provided an update of the
program being developed by staff to recognize volunteers who contribute their time and efforts
to the city. Commissioner Stolar suggested separating the school category from community
groups and organizations. Commissioner Scharfenberg asked about considering city employees
that go above and beyond their normal duties in terms of recreation programs. Chair Daniel
asked for clarification on how the information regarding these awards would be relayed to the
public. After discussion regarding the number of award categories, the commission made the
following motion.
Stolar moved, Campion seconded that the Park and Recreation Commission recommend
that the City Council approve the Park and Recreation Volunteer and Service Recognition
Awards with the following categories: Resident, Business, Community Groups and
Organizations, and Schools. All voted in favor, except Scharfenberg who opposed, and the
motion carried with a vote of 6 to 1.
RECREATION PROGRAM REPORTS:
2008 TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY EVALUATION.
John Stutzman reviewed the events
and sponsors for the 2008 tree lighting ceremony. Commissioner Scharfenberg suggested
offering hot chocolate along with the cider and coffee. Commissioner Stolar suggested looking
into inviting vendors offering holiday wares, similar to what Excelsior does. Todd Hoffman
asked Dale Gregory to comment on the use of LED lights.
Park and Rec Commission Summary - December 9, 2008
RECREATION CENTER REPORT.
Jodi Sarles reviewed programs and facility information
for the fall and holiday season. Commission members asked for updates on how various
programs are operating.
SENIOR CENTER REPORT.
Susan Bill provided an update on the fall activities at the Senior
Center.
PARK & TRAIL MAINTENANCE REPORT.
Dale Gregory provided the report on park and
trail maintenance projects completed during the fall and progress of current projects.
ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS:
Todd Hoffman provided an update on 2008 Park and Trail
Capital Improvement Projects, ongoing projects for 2009 and a discussion of future forecasting
for the park dedication fund.
COMMISSION MEMBER COMMITTEE REPORTS:
None.
COMMISSION MEMBER PRESENTATIONS:
None.
ADMINISTRATIVE PACKET:
None.
Scharfenberg moved, Campion seconded to adjourn the Park and Recreation Commission
meeting. All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 7 to 0.
