Chairwoman Sherol Howard called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Jane Kubitz, Bernice Billison, Mark Littfin Sr., Selda Heinlein,
Barbara Headla, and Sherol Howard.
MEMBERS ABSENT: Albin Olson.
ST AFF PRESENT: Sharmin AI-Jaff, Planner II.
APPROV AL OF MINUTES DATED FEBRUARY 17. 1995.: This item was tabled to the
following meeting.
APPROV AL OF THE AGENDA: Bernice Billison moved to approve the Agenda, Jane
Kubitz seconded the motion. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
VISITOR PRESENTATION. REOUEST TO START AN AARP CHAPTER IN THE CITY
OF CHANHASSEN:
Duke Hewitt, an AARP representative attended the meeting and stated that he wishes to start .
and AARP in Chanhassen. He stated that AARP was founded on April 30, 1955. The
program's vision is to serve and not be served. A group meets for fun, food, and frolic. They
must meet 4 times a year. AARP has an office at the Mall of America. They must meet
once a month or 8 times a year. The organization must have officers consisting of a
presidents, vice president, secretary and treasurer. They are what makes the Board of
Directors. Mr. Hewitt asked the Commission to consider starting the program here so that
additional services can be provided in a proactive community such as this one. AARP has a
publication called Modern Maturity. There is a $9.00 membership fee that goes to
Washington. AARP is a non conservative strong political organization. The commission felt
that the Senior Center was providing the services already. However, they requested additional
information on the program to be able to evaluate it more and determine if there is a need for
it in the City.
UPDA TE ON SENIOR CENTER ACTIVITIES
Commissioner Albin Olson was not present, hence, this item was not discussed.
UPDA TE ON SENIOR HOUSING.
The Senior Commission was informed that all plans have been submitted to the City and that
the application for Senior Housing will be appearing before the Planning Commission on

April 19. Staff recommended that the Senior Commission attend the meeting to show support
for the project.
UPDATE ON THE CHORE PROGRAM AND SENIOR LINKAGE LINE (SLU.
The Senior Commission was informed that the number of calls continue to increase. The call
are coming from all of Carver County. SLL, SAIL, and Metro SLL, has been visiting various
Senior Centers.

UPDATE ON SENIOR CENTER ACTIVITIES

Commissioner Albin Olson stated that there will be a trip to Halasek on May 2. A mystery
trip is in the planning stage. There will be a trip to Duluth and on July 2, there will be a trip
to the Saints Ball Game. Preparations are being made for the 4th of July celebration.
UPDA TE ON SENIOR HOUSING.
The Senior Commission was informed that the Planning Commission recommended approval
of the plans on April 19. The proposal will appear before the City Council on May 8, and
the Senior Commission should attend the meeting to show support for the project.
UPDATE ON THE CHORE PROGRAM AND SENIOR LINKAGE LINE (SLLl.
The Senior Commission was informed that there is a new volunteer that has started to answer
telephones.
UPDA TE ON AARP CHAPTER IN THE CITY OF CHANHASSEN:
Commissioner Littfin stated that he is not in favor of starting an AARP Chapter in the City.
It will be a duplication of services that the Senior Center is already offering. The Senior
Commission agreed with his opinion and decided not to pursue the matter any further.

VISITOR PRESENTATION: PRESENTATION BY ELIM CARE. BOB DAHL. CHUCK
ELLIS. AND NANCY SOMAN. Bob Dahl stated the Elim Care is a nonprofit organization,
67 years old. It focuses on comprehensive services. Currently, it is working on services to
allow seniors stay in their homes. The organization has 750 volunteers and over 400 .
employees. Elim is a religious organization. Services provided include but are not limited to
Health Aid, and Home Cleaning. 95% of residents use Home Cleaning services. They hoped
to be able to manage the Chanhassen Senior Housing when it was developed. They also
requested their name be added to agencies that will receive Requests For Proposals. AI-Jaff
informed them that the decision will be made by Carver County Housing and Redevelopment
Authority.
UPDATE ON SENIOR CENTER ACTIVITIES
The Women's Club toured the Weather Station. The next movie is Forest Gump. There will
be a 4 hour refresher course on Defensive Driving. There will be an Ice Cream social, $0.25
per scoop. There will be an all day trip to Duluth that will cost $54.00. There will be a trip
to the Minneapolis Loons Baseball Game. On the 4th of July, there will be a Senior Center
Pancake Social from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The Nights of Columbus will do it for $3:00 or
maybe free. If they do charge for it, all proceeds will be donated to the Senior Center. A
new Senior Center Director will be hired to replace Dawn Lemme. 20 hours per week.
UPDA TE ON SENIOR HOUSING.
Staff informed the Senior Commission that the City and the County are currently working of
finalizing the funding for the project. They have not started selling any bonds yet.

NAMING THE SENIOR HOUSING BUILDING.
The Senior Commission directed staff to put an add in the Villager requesting proposals from
residents to name the Senior Housing Building. The Senior Commission will make a
recommendation on the name and the City Council will make the final decision.
UPDATE ON THE CHORE PROGRAM AND SENIOR LINKAGE I,INE (SLLl.
The Senior Commission was informed that there is a new marketing campaign for the
program. New brochures were distributed. Kitty Sitter stated that Chore Corp is part of this
program, which is state operated. Therefor, the program funding should continue. The
number of calls for April was in the 30s. More calls are coming in from the west. SLL has
3 new volunteers. SLL has an add that appears on Channel 17 at 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays.

APPROV AL OF THE AGENDA: Billison moved to approve the Agenda, Heinlein seconded
the motion. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
VISITOR PRESENT A TION: AI-Jaff stated that Olson Staffing was contacted to give a
presentation to the Senior Commission. However, they did not respond to the message left
for them. They will be contacted for the following meeting. Howard stated that they offer
jobs for seniors in the western suburbs that pay $7.00 per hour.
UPDATE ON SENIOR CENTER ACTIVITIES

On the 4th of July, there will be a Senior Center Pancake Social from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
The Nights of Columbus will provide everything and it will be free for the seniors. Perkins
will donate the pancake dough. The Senior Center had a guest speaker from Century Bank.
It was requested that a member of the Senior Advisory Board join the Century Bank Advisory
Board. The 4 hour refresher course on Defensive Driving was attended by 27 individuals.
The Ice Cream social was not successful.
UPDA TE ON SENIOR HOUSING.
Staff informed the Senior Commission that the City and the County are currently working of

The Senior Commission reviewed the names they had received and the following names were
selected for the City Council to chose from:

UPDA TE ON THE CHORE PROGRAM AND SENIOR LINKAGE LINE (SLU.
The Senior Commission was informed by Kitty Sitter that SLL received 33 calls last month.
One third of these calls were Chore calls. The 1996-1997 agenda for Chore Corp did not get
approved in its entirety. The State wants to get out of providing Chore services. They are
currently working with Ridge View on this issue. This change will make their work more
cost effective. There are currently 100 agencies that are signed up in the program. In order
for the program to be cost effective, 1,167 vendors must sign up. Health Care is
predetermined as a need. The Electronic Yellow Pages is looking at helping non SAIL
counties with Information and Referral. However, they will not provided referrals.

On June 16, 1995, the Senior Commission re d a list of names for the Senior Housing
building. The three names that were favored tlj~ mgst are Maple Leaf Heights, Centennial Hill,
and Arrow Ridge. Since then, additional nameswei~~ubmitted to the City and staff thought the
