CHANHASSEN SENIOR COMMISION
REGULAR MEETING
AUGUST 18, 1995
Chairwoman Sherol Howard called the meeting to order at 9:35 a.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Jane Kubitz, Selda Heinlein, Bernice Billison, Sherol Howard,
Barbara Headla, and Albin Olson.
MEMBERS ABSENT: Mark Littfin Sr.
ST AFF PRESENT: Sharrnin Al-Jaff, Planner II, Kitty Sitter, Senior Linkage Line Coordinator,
and Kara Willems, Senior Center Coordinator.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES DATED JULY 21. 1995: The minutes were approved as
submitted. A motion was made and seconded to carry on with the meeting.
APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA: Billison moved to approve the Agenda, Heinlein seconded
the motion. All voted in favor and the motion carried.
VISITOR PRESENTATION: The guest speaker for the August 18th meeting was Carol
Miletti, from Olsten Staffing. Carol discussed the various options seniors may have locating
employment in the nearby area. Carol began the presentation with a brief history peice on the
company. Olsten staffing is a 45 year old company, and is the largest employment service in
Norrth America. In 1994 over 700,000 people a day (United States and Canada) were serviced
with employment. The growth ofOlsten Staffing has become quite evident in 1995, with a 25%
growth rate. Olsten credits it's Sales and Customer Service staff for this progress. Olsten is
making a huge effort to expand its services into Minnesota. Olsten has five different office
locations in Minnesota:
-Edina #820-0407
-Plymouth #551-7990
-Minneapolis #339-7981, ext. 4695
-Bloomington (Technical office)
-Golden Valley (Accounting office)
The Edina, Plymouth and Minneapolis offices are the main offices you may call for employment.
The Edina and Plymouth offices should be the contacts for the Chanhassen and Chaska area.
Olsten has many accounts in Eden Prairie, Golden Valley, and Chaska. One of the largest
accounts it has is with Carleson Company, in Plymouth. The basic salary range for employment
with Olsten is between $6.50 and $8.00 an hour. The types of jobs that can be found with Olsten
range anywhere from assembly, packaging, clerical, word processing, telemarketing, and
accounting work. There are some benefits with Olsten. If you work a full forty hours a pay
period you receive a $25.00 bonus, and if you put accumulate 500 hours, you recieve an
additional $25.00 bonus. Health insurance, paid vacation, and paid holidays are available to
people who work a certain amount oftime with Olsten. These time ramifaications were not
discussed. Other benefits to working with Olsten is the flexiability, you need not work every
time they call you. You can deny a job offer and not worry about being penalized later on. There

is also free skill training. Anyone interested in brushing up on their typing skills or other
technical skills can do so without a service charge.
Carol closed her presentation with a question/answer session. In this time period she
covered the issue of working at home. Olsten tends to stay away from this situation due to
insurance liability. Carol offered to corne out to the Senior Center and speak with other
interested seniors about employment. She also mentioned that if we had enough interest already
she could set up a specific time once a week or once every other week to screen and sign up
people for current job opportunities. In the meantime Carol is sending out a tape for the senior
center to use.
