Registrations are coming in later, but programs are filling. Attendance in regular weekly programs such as cards (Bridge, 500, Hand and Foot), Woodcarving, Bingo, Women's Club and Defensive Driving are doing well. We also added a Facebook class and monthly Friday afternoon cribbage. Older American's Month was celebrated in May. The Senior Center always hosts special activities during the month in honor of older adults. Highlights for May 2009 included: Breakfast with the Mayor (always a favorite); Health, Wealth and Wise; Fitness Sampler and Senior Center Appreciation Lunch; Golf Tournament; 1 sl Annual Nintendo Wii Tournament; Cribbage Tournament; Minnesota Twins Game; CHAN-o-Iaries Appreciation Lunch; and several educational presentations. The 2009 Lunch Box Series, "Passport to the World," has been very well received. The June "Swedish Midsummer Night Festival" and the July "African Adventure" programs were great fun where participants experienced ethnic food and entertainment. These programs have been so successful that I will continue to offer them in 2010. Numerous educational classes have been offered and local residents and talent have been utilized to highlight featured countries. The Senior Center's Annual Lake Ann Picnic had 135 people in attendance--the biggest crowd ever! This year the picnic was moved from May to June and to the new Hilltop shelter. Everyone commented on how great the new shelter was and I already have the date booked for 2010. Once again, the Chanhassen Lion's Club generously sponsored the picnic, providing the food, beverages and door prices. A great time was had by all. For the remainder of 2009, I will continue to offer a balance of free and moderately priced programs and trips; thus, making the Senior Center a place that all can enjoy. For example, in July free programs include: a tour of the new high school and the "Concert in the Park-Hot Seats.. .Cool Treats" ice cream social. This event will be a time to meet the members of the Senior Commission and the Senior Advisory Board. Chanhassen is a Community for Life - Providing for Today and Planning for Tomorrow
