KleinBank Summer Concert Series
This was the fifth year for the City of Chanhassen' s summer concert series.
This year the program featured nine different bands from a variety of genres,
including folk rock, concert band, barbershop, and children's music. Each
concert consisted of an hour-long performance from the contracted group and
was free of charge to the public. As we did last year, a majority of the
program implementation was a responsibility of the department's intern. This
provided a good hands-on learning experience that created a sense of program
ownership for him.
Overall the program was again successful, with the attendance averaging
approximately 175 people per show. Each show featured a different type of
music and was well-liked by those in attendance. Two of the more popular
bands that I would highly recommend bringing back in the future are The
Minnesota Valley Community Band and BoJoNo.
Once again, KleinBank of Chanhassen was the title sponsor of the event in
partnership with the city. Their donation of $2,000.00 is greatly appreciated
and helps keep the expenses down for this program. This year they
participated with balloons and face painting during the children's
entertainment. Staff recommends that Kleinbank be contacted regarding
continuing this partnership in the future.
Additionally, the City contracted with the School II to sell snacks at each
concert. The vendor sold ice cream sandwiches, hot dogs, sno-cones,
homemade cookies, chips, candy, pop, and water. This continues to be a nice
addition to the shows.
Other recommendations for the Summer Concert Series include:
. Have staff maintain their continued marketing strategies to ensure
effective notification of this free program.

· Begin one or both of the lunchtime shows at 11 :30 a.m. instead of
12 noon. Concerts would continue to last one hour as this seems to be
an appropriate time frame.
· Continue to work with both KleinBank and the concessions vendor on
partnerships for future years.
· Continue to make the implementation of the concerts one of the
primary responsibilities of the summer recreation intern.
· Offer 2 children's music shows during the lunch hour.
· Contact local daycares inviting them to the free lunchtime shows.
· Continue to send the bands a map of the park. This allows them to see
the layout of the park as well as instruct them not to drive in the park.
Overall this is a valuable program that the City of Chanhassen offers and, as
commissioners can see by the numbers, is a well-utilized program. It is my
recommendation that we continue this program in the future.
