REGULAR MEETING
SUMMARY MINUTES
SEPTEMBER 22, 2009
Chairman Daniel called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT:
Jeff Daniel, Tom Kelly, Glenn Stolar, Steve Scharfenberg, Thor
Smith, Scott Wendt and Elise Ryan
STAFF PRESENT:
Jerry Ruegemer, Recreation Superintendent; Sue Bill, Senior Center
Coordinator; Jodi Sarles, Recreation Center Manager; and Dale Gregory, Park Superintendent
APPROVAL OF AGENDA:Smith moved, Kelly seconded to approve the agenda as
amended by Commissioner Wendt to provide an update on the Transportation Advisory
Board bike tour.
PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Commissioner Wendt discussed the bike tour of the city’s park and trail system with the
Transportation Advisor Board, Carver County Commission Workman, members of MnDOT, a
representative from the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Todd Hoffman and Jerry Ruegemer.
The biggest concern he took away from the bike tour was asking the City to not only focus on
the recreational aspect of trails but on transportation as well. Getting people to and from work
within the county. Commissioner Stolar announced he will be sending information to staff and
commission members regarding an upcoming event sponsored by the Sajai Foundation which
targets childhood obesity.
VISITOR PRESENTATIONS:
None.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Stolar moved, Wendt seconded to approve the verbatim and
summary minutes of the Park and Recreation Commission meeting dated August 25, 2009
as presented. All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 7 to 0.
RECREATION CENTER OPERATIONS OVERVIEW.
Jodi Sarles gave a presentation outlining the operations and programs offered at the Chanhassen
Recreation Center. Kendra Olson and Amy Conradi discussed the Dance for Fun program which
has been offered at the rec center since 1995. Taylor Braun showed a DVD and discussed the
benefits of the Tae Kwon Do program which is currently being offered at the rec center.
Members of the Enhanced Fitness program talked about the benefits of fitness for seniors. Jodi
Sarles talked about collaborations with Sue Bill and John Stutzman for programming
alternatives. Commissioner Ryan asked for clarification on how the rec center is marketed.

Chair Daniel excused himself from the meeting. Vice Chair Smith took over as Acting
Chair of the Park and Recreation Commission meeting.
2009 LAKE ANN CONCESSION/BOAT RENTAL EVALUATION.
Jerry Ruegemer
reviewed the evaluation for the 2009 Lake Ann concession and boat rental activities.
Commissioner Kelly asked if the City could make more revenue in boat rentals by increasing the
number of boats available. Commissioner Scharfenberg asked if there was any feedback with
respect to the change in the lifeguard hours at Lake Ann Beach.
RECREATION PROGRAM REPORTS:
2009 HALLOWEEN PARTY.
Jerry Ruegemer provided an update on the planning for the
2009 Halloween Party, asking for volunteers from commission members. Commissioner Stolar
suggested advertising programs offered at the rec center during the Halloween Party.
SENIOR CENTER REPORT.
Sue Bill reviewed the programs and events being offered at the
senior center.
PARK AND TRAIL MAINTENANCE REPORT.
Dale Gregory provided an update on
current and planned projects for the fall and winter. Commissioner Stolar asked for an update
on remodeling of a concession stand at the Lake Ann Park ballfields.
COMMISSION MEMBER COMMITTEE REPORTS.
None.
COMMISSION MEMBER PRESENTATIONS.
None.
ADMINISTRATIVE PACKET.
Jerry Ruegemer highlighted items of interest in the
administrative packet, i.e. the aeration permit, the TAB bike ride, and the first annual
Chanhassen High School homecoming parade.
Scharfenberg moved, Stolar seconded to adjourn the meeting. All voted in favor and the
motion carried unanimously with a vote of 6 to 0. The Park and Recreation Commission
meeting was adjourned.
