REGULAR MEETING
SUMMARY MINUTES
NOVEMBER 24, 2009
Chairman Daniel called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.
MEMBERS PRESENT:
Jeff Daniel, Tom Kelly, Glenn Stolar, Steve Scharfenberg, Thor
Smith, Scott Wendt and Elise Ryan
STAFF PRESENT:
Todd Hoffman, Park and Rec Director; Jerry Ruegemer, Recreation
Superintendent; and Sue Bill, Senior Center Coordinator
PUBLIC PRESENT:

APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Scharfenberg moved, Wendt seconded to approve the agenda,
amended to include an update under Commission Member Committee Reports by Elise
Ryan on the town ball meetings and an update on the Lake Ann Park ballfield concession
stand under Administrative Presentations. All voted in favor and the motion carried
unanimously with a vote of 7 to 0.
PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Todd Hoffman noted the 2010 meeting schedule was
included in the packet.
VISITOR PRESENTATIONS:
None.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:Stolar moved, Wendt seconded to approve the verbatim and
summary minutes of the Park and Recreation Commission meeting dated October 27, 2009
as presented. All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 7 to 0.
FOCUS ON SENIOR CENTER.
Sue Bill, Senior Center Coordinator gave a presentation on
the activities and programs available through the senior center. Martha Walker discussed the
activities she’s involved with at the senior center. Dave Headla talked about the One on One
computer instruction program and the wood carving group. Marlyn Mauritz, President of the
Senior Advisory Board, spoke about the board’s role in assisting with programming and ideas.
Curt Robinson talked about the Lions Club’s support of the senior center throughout the year.
Commissioner Scharfenberg asked for clarification on the difference between the Senior
Advisory Board and the Senior Commission.

ESTABLISH 2010 PICNIC RESERVATION FEES.
Jerry Ruegemer presented the staff
report recommending that the fees for 2010 remain the same as 2009. Commissioner Stolar
asked about customer feedback regarding fees and if reducing the fees during the week might
help with bookings. Chairman Daniel asked how Chanhassen’s fees compare with surrounding
communities. Jerry Ruegemer noted Chanhassen was on the high side.
Stolar moved, Scharfenberg seconded that the Park and Recreation Commission
recommend that the City Council adopt the 2010 group picnic reservation fees at the same
level as 2009. All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 7 to 0.
REVIEW NOMINEES FOR PARK AND RECREATION SERVICE AWARDS AND
MAKE RECOMMENDATION TO THE CITY COUNCIL.
Jerry Ruegemer reviewed the list of nominees. Commissioner Stolar suggested nominating the
Chanhassen Lions Club for their work with the senior center under the community groups and
organizations category.
Smith moved, Wendt seconded that the Park and Recreation Commission recommend the
City Council award the Park and Recreation Service Awards to the following nominees:
Resident Group:
Juggbros – Brett and Blake Szalapski
Business Group:
The Mustard Seed Landscaping and Garden Center
Community Groups and Organizations:
Chanhassen Lions Club
Groups Representing Schools in Districts 276 and 112:
Greg Drewiske and Danny Hatton
All voted in favor and the motion carried unanimously with a vote of 7 to 0.
RECREATION PROGRAM REPORTS:
2009 HALLOWEEN PARTY EVALUATION.
Jerry Ruegemer presented the evaluation of
the 2009 Halloween Party. Commissioner Kelly asked if staff had considered charging adults a
fee for the party as well as children.
2009/10 WINTER PROGRAMMING.
Jerry Ruegemer reviewed the programming being
offered this winter season.
2009 TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY.
Jerry Ruegemer reminded the commission that the

Tree Lighting ceremony will be on Saturday, December 5 at 5:00 p.m. Commissioner Ryan
suggested collecting donations of gifts and/or food at the event in the future.
UPDATE ON LAKE ANN PARK BALLFIELD CONCESSION STAND.
Todd Hoffman
provided an update on the progress of the Lake Ann Park ballfield concession stand and the
roadblock encountered with the Department of Health codes.

COMMISSION MEMBER COMMITTEE REPORTS.
Chairman Daniel provided an update
on the town baseball meetings he and Commissioner Ryan have attended over the past couple
weeks.
ADMINISTRATIVE PACKET.
Todd Hoffman noted that the annual renewal permit for
winter use of the Minnesota River Valley LRT was included in the packet.
Scharfenberg moved, Kelly seconded to adjourn the meeting. All voted in favor and the
motion carried unanimously with a vote of 7 to 0. The Park and Recreation Commission
meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
