2010 Arbor Day Event
Introduction
The Environmental Commission would like to invite the Park and Recreation
Commission to join in the planning for this year's Arbor Day event. The
Environmental Commission envisions a tree planting project benefiting one of the
city parks. Event details and activities have not been determined nor has the
scope of the event. The Environmental Commission purposely has not developed
the event in order to encourage an open discussion with the Park and Recreation
Commission.
Background
In recent years the Arbor Day event has occurred on the first Saturday in May and
taken place in City Center Park and at the Chanhassen Library. The main features
of the event included a park clean up, tree sale, educational presentations, kid's
crafts, information booth with Master Gardeners and a noon-time lunch with the
Mayor. The event is small but well attended by young families.
Discussion
The Environmental Commission and staff are embarking on a program change to
the event to recapture the integral idea of Arbor Day - tree planting. The
Environmental Commission briefly discussed possible activities for the event at
their January meeting, but would like to explore all event ideas with the Park and
Recreation Commission. In addition to promoting the core value of Arbor Day,
the threat of the future impact that the emerald ash borer will have on the tree
inventory in the city parks makes the tree planting project seem timely and
appropriate. The general project idea, that of planting trees in a park, is a great
opportunity for the Environmental Commission and Park and Recreation
Commission to work together to improve our city parks.
