Members present at the meeting: Sherol Howard, Bunny Billison, Bobbie Headla,
Selda Heinlein, Jane Kubitz, Albin Olson, Sharmin A1-Jaff, and Kara Wickenhauser.
Members absent: Dale Geving.
April minutes approved by the Council.
The Senior Commission is scheduled to meet with the City Council at the
Arboretum on Monday, July 7th, from 7pm - 8pm. Discussions were made in
regards to the possibilities of presenting the "Senior Awareness," slide show,
prepared by Kitty Sitter and the Senior Awareness committee. Kara will contact
Kitty to see how far she is on this project. Some suggestions were made to save the
slide show until the end of the meeting. The intention of this suggestion was to
make sure that the issues that needed to be addressed with the City Council were
discussed in a timely matter. The slide show can be presented if time allows.
A discussion was held about the Senior Commission Goals and Objectives for 1997.
The Senior Commission decided to go through the list and prioritize the goals and
consolidate the goals that are ungoing or not as important. These were the revisions
made:
* Goal #1 - Is ungoing - Staff is aware of the increased numbers at the
Senior Center and the need for additional space in the future.
* Goal #2 - Southwest Metro is beginning to run the Circular Bus system
on June 16th. Discussions were held in regards to how the circular system
will work and how a transfer bus is used in the system as well.
* Goal #3 - New name to Senior Linkage Line is" Carver County Senior
Information Line." Discussions are being held with Kitty Sitter to
determine the needs for the new database system.
* Goal #4 - A meeting was already held with Dave Vieland, Auburn Manor
Administrator, and Julie Frick, HRA, to discuss the future for another senior
residence in Chanhassen. A motion was made to rechange the language in
this goal. Suggestions were made to consider assisted living units in the
next senior residence. Sharmin suggested that a we site a need for a survey
in this goal.
~ Goal #5 - Bunny, Bobble, and Sherol all agreed to take tums to attend the
Historical Society meetings. This will display the support the Senior
Commission wants to offer to the Chanhassen Heritage Preservation. This
goal will be clustered with the other support issues such as the; Senior Expo
(Goal #la), Food Shelf program (Goal #9), Urgent Care Facilities
(Goal#7), Intergenerational activities (Goal # 11), Revamp Senior Lists (Goal
#12), Create a Biking, Walking, Cross Country Skiing Club
(Goal #13).
~ Goal #6 - Senior Commission is still working on recruiting businesses to
put up Senior Parking signs. TARGET and Perkins agreed to put 2 signs up
for seniors. Bobbie Headla will solicit Byerly's for support and Albin Olson
will approach the surrounding banks.
~ Goal #7 - This goal will be clustered with goals #5, #7, #la, #11, #12,
and #13.
~ Goal #8 - Suggestions were made to offer educational series that would
draw new people from the community. These series would be similar to
mini workshops. Topics for discussion could be endless. This goal
coordinates with goal #17.
~ Goal #9 - This goal will be clustered with goal #5, #7, #la, #12, and #13.
~ Goal #10 - This goal was decided later to stand alone. This committee is
supported by a Senior Commission Representative and Senior Center
Coordinator.
~ Goal #11 - This goal will be clustered with goals #5, #7, #9, #la, #12,
and #13.
~ Goal #12 - This goal will be clustered with goals #5, #7, #9, #la, #11,
and #13.
~ Goal #13 - This goal will be clustered with goals #5, #7, #9, #la, #11,
and #12.
~ Goal #14 - On Tuesday, May 27, 1997, the City Council will make their
final approval on the fate of Congregate Dining in Chanhassen. Sharmin
A1-Jaff expressed the concern for senior support at the meeting. The
Congregate Dining issue is currently on shaky ground. The vent downstairs
is pushing heat upstairs while the heat downstairs is being lost. To fix this
problem an additional $2000.00 was added to the Congregate Dining
package. Sherol will draft up a memo to hand out to seniors at Centennial
Hills and Kara will call both the Women's Club and Men's Club members.
'~ Goal 15 - Already in progress and ready to finish. A committee was
formed with 2 members each of the Senior Commission, Senior Advisory
Board, and Senior Information Line, with Kitty Sitter heading the project.
'~ Goal 16 - A meeting is already set for Monday, July 7th, from 7pm -
8pm.
'~ Goal 17 - Senior Commission needs to focus more on this area. A
discussion was held in regards to the vision of this goal.
A Senior Information Line update was given by Kara Wickenhauser. Everything is
still running smoothly. Volunteer staff has remained the same. Telephone numbers
for the month of April were 32. Monthly reports for March, April and May will be
handed out at the next meeting on June 20, 1997.
Bobbie Headla gave a update on the Senior Center activities.
* 4 Hour Defensive Driving Course - June 5th, from 8:30am - 12:30pm
* New Fogey Follies - June 5th, from l:00pm - 5:00pm
* Minnesota Zoo Trip - June 24th, from 9:00am - 4:00pm
* Craft & Bake Sale - July 3rd, 5:30pm - 8:00pm
* 4th of July Pancake Breakfast - July 4th, from 9:00am - 10:30am
* Lake Susan Picnic - July 12th, from 12:00 noon - 4:00pm
* Get To Know Your County - July 25th, from 8:00am - 5:00pm
* Chanhassen Dinner Theatres "State Fair" - July 30th, from 11:00am -
3:30pm
* Hinckley Grand Casino Trip - August 12th, 8:00am - 5:00pm
* Minnesota State Fair - August 28th, 7:45am - 5:00pm
* Mississippi River Cruise - August 20th, 9:15am - 5:00pm
* Mystery Tour - September 12th, from 7:30am - 5:00pm
Bobbie discussed the new intergenerational projects the Senior Center hope to begin
in September. A news article was featured in the Chanhassen Villager on the hope
of this project.
Miscellaneous Items - The remainder of Mark Litffin's memorial money $23.00,
will be donated to the Flood Relief.
