Arbor Day Discussion:
The group began the discussion by brainstorming on the dates,
community involvement, and event structure. The date and place was decdied to be May 8 at
Lake Ann Park. The commissions and city will contact area schools and groups with an
invitation to participate in the planting. The community at large will also be invited. There
could be a program with kids and refreshments will be provided. The food will be something
simple like cookies, juice and water. No meals such as hot dogs. The mayor and maybe Todd H
could do the welcome to the planting groups. Maybe a school group could do a presentation. A
tree identification scavenger hunt could be made and given out. There could be prizes for
completing it. Or a tree id map could be made with ribbons tied on the trees and a map key with
speices. There should be music. Maybe ask John about Battle of the Bands competitors
performing during the event. Glenn mentioned that Park and Rec are offering plaques for
memorial tree donations. Maybe we could solicit businesses for donations of trees and add their
names on a plaque. Community groups from high school on up could be asked to help supervise
the planting.
Program ideas: tree planting sign up, ask John S. about music/entertainers, EAB
info/presentation.
Planting: do demonstration with all planting groups, break into groups. Ask key club, high
school environmental club, CAA, Mtka seniors, senior center to come to event.
Food: Culvers?, juice, cookies
A volunteer meeting should be held early in the morning to train the volunteer planting leaders.
A follow up of what we planted and why should be done after the trees are planted. The villager
should be contacted with the event details and asked to cover the event.
After the event, the Arbor Day message should be continued – plant more, right tree in the right
spot, etc.
2010 Arbor Day Poster Contest Selection:
The commissioners selected the contest winners
from the drawings submitted by Bluff Creek St. Hubert elementary schools. Jill will forward the
winner (Lauren, St Hubert) to the state contest.
2010 Work Plan
: A suggestion was made to have a tour of the parks and other environmentally
related sites in the spring or summer.

Interviews with EC applicants will occur at the March meeting.
The next meeting will be moved to Wed., Mar. 10 at 6:00 pm.
Meeting adjourned at approximately 7:50 PM.
