EC 2010 02 10 Chanhassen Environmental Commission (EC) Regular Meeting February 10, 2010 Members Present: Rose Kircher, J.R. Relick, Beverly Foster, Denny Hansen Members Absent : Staff Present: Jill Sinclair, Environmental Resources Specialist Guests : Glenn Stolar and Jeff Daniels, Park and Rec Commissioners Minutes: January minutes were approved. Arbor Day Discussion: The group began the discussion by brainstorming on the dates, community involvement, and event structure. The date and place was decdied to be May 8 at Lake Ann Park. The commissions and city will contact area schools and groups with an invitation to participate in the planting. The community at large will also be invited. There could be a program with kids and refreshments will be provided. The food will be something simple like cookies, juice and water. No meals such as hot dogs. The mayor and maybe Todd H could do the welcome to the planting groups. Maybe a school group could do a presentation. A tree identification scavenger hunt could be made and given out. There could be prizes for completing it. Or a tree id map could be made with ribbons tied on the trees and a map key with speices. There should be music. Maybe ask John about Battle of the Bands competitors performing during the event. Glenn mentioned that Park and Rec are offering plaques for memorial tree donations. Maybe we could solicit businesses for donations of trees and add their names on a plaque. Community groups from high school on up could be asked to help supervise the planting. Program ideas: tree planting sign up, ask John S. about music/entertainers, EAB info/presentation. Planting: do demonstration with all planting groups, break into groups. Ask key club, high school environmental club, CAA, Mtka seniors, senior center to come to event. Food: Culvers?, juice, cookies A volunteer meeting should be held early in the morning to train the volunteer planting leaders. A follow up of what we planted and why should be done after the trees are planted. The villager should be contacted with the event details and asked to cover the event. After the event, the Arbor Day message should be continued – plant more, right tree in the right spot, etc. 2010 Arbor Day Poster Contest Selection: The commissioners selected the contest winners from the drawings submitted by Bluff Creek St. Hubert elementary schools. Jill will forward the winner (Lauren, St Hubert) to the state contest. 2010 Work Plan : A suggestion was made to have a tour of the parks and other environmentally related sites in the spring or summer. General Discussion: Interviews with EC applicants will occur at the March meeting. The next meeting will be moved to Wed., Mar. 10 at 6:00 pm. Meeting adjourned at approximately 7:50 PM.
